Civilization VI

Well glad its not just me.

I guess it should also encourage some trading, but in the games I've played the opposition don't seem to have a lot to spare either.

Trading aint great when the AI always wants everything you have for access to their fish.

..it's like being married.

I'm still trying to understand the power of items in this game but they do seem to want a lot and offer a little.

One thing that does seem to have changed quite a bit is the effect of food. Civ 5 it was always good to hoard food and have food focus for the population. Get that right at the start of the game and you were set for later. In this you need to have housing and amenities or your population just stops growing.

Food seems pretty irrelevant now. You burn the first bit of potential farm resource down to boost your city through the early stages, and then production is king as you need to get things built to boost your city further. Later on, even a few farms produces epic amounts of food so it isn't a big deal to provide for your cities.

There's a tier list starting on civfanatics if anyones interested in seeing it. Not surprised that people rate Germany as top as the Hansa and Free Imperial Cities are insane, although a few other placements surprised me such as Brazil as if you can't get a good rainforest start you gain so little from their special ability.

Is it it just me or are the turns really slow on this? Loving the game but you seem to wait forever for the turns to end - Please wait..........

I swear Civ 5 was pretty instant, or am I just impatient? lol

It does load slower yeah, at least for me. Late game isn't as noticeable I find, but early game is much slower.

This will sound wierd but bear with me here. make sure you have windows defender turned off or at least the civ6 folder in steamapps excluded because for some reason it messes with turn times. I know. How is that possible. I have no idea.

I don't find it any worse than Civ V. I usually switch on quick move which helps, otherwise you have to wait while any units within visible range are shifted around.

Am I the only one that doesn't like districts?

Take silly long to build, for small bonusses, and waste good land, which especially later on is sparse.

All these on map wonders and districts waste valuable land I want worked late game. Getting cities to 40+ is less realistic.

In civ5 I used to have cities that could build pretty much every unit in 1-2 turns or any new building (eg. later on research labs, hospitals, etc...) in 4 turns max.

Here you have a heavy industry city with 100+ Hammers per turn, and you need 10+ turns for a bloody district, that weakens my cities food and prod ?

I liked from civ 4> civ 5 how a city could have much more worked land.
Civ 6 in turn, reduced the amount of land available for Food/Hammers/Gold.

At first but then I realised land doesn't have the power that it did in Civ 5. You don't need tonnes of farms etc. anymore.

As someone that is completely new to the game, I thought I'd weigh in with my views so far (about 15 hours, mostly multiplayer). I'm not new to RTS games by the way, just never been attracted to Civ - I bought it for multiplayer with mates and some singleplayer time-killing.

I started off with the tutorial once it was downloaded. Fairly simple stuff, teaches you the basics, nothing too much to worry about. But from there it went downhill. After about 10 to 15 minutes of the tutorial, it kind of just "dumped" me into the game without direction. It ended up taking me well over an hour to finish that tutorial scenario. But, happy with it finished, off I waltzed to multiplayer to join my mates!

I don't know what the heck I'm doing. As a new player to the series, I have no idea on the benefits of building my first city by the coast, or next to a river etc. It has the "suggested" locations show up, so I just pick one of those none-the-wiser. The tutorial does nothing, to my recollection, of explaining where you should pick. I then start the process of exploring with my Warriors and begin construction of a Builder to get some city improvements going! Here is where I feel I got let off lightly. I have read numerous times about the early onslaught of Barbarians, and one of my mates was on the receiving end of this - I think I just got lucky and didn't have much Barbarian interaction.

And so starts the progress towards my Civilization. I begin researching things without really knowing what or why. The same can be said for the Civic Charters. I feel like I'm making some ground, fending off a few Barbarians and finding some villages, meet a free City State, make contact with another civilization; all is quite grand.

And then I'm made aware that after a certain amount of time, I seem to be really lagging behind in every aspect of the game... My military status is weak with not many units fielded and those that are available are sub-par. My technology research was definitely slack compared to those I had encountered. This whole culture thing baffles me and I don't understand it, all I know is I somehow obtained a person that can write a book? That must be progress! In short, I'm not really doing that well! Heck, I still only have one city compared to the three or four that other people have!

So I think "Well, I'm doing pretty poor at what everyone else is doing, so what can I do that they aren't interested in?" The answer? Religion! Fantastic, I think to myself, I'll play the religious game and slowly spread across the land like the plague it really is! But alas, there are no Great Prophets left, and thus I cannot found a religion. Sigh.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really enjoying playing it - it's good fun, it looks pretty enough, the music isn't bad - but for someone new to the game, it's a bit of a mind****!

9/10 would rate again.

It takes a few games to get the knack, but generally you want to build cities near fresh water or the coast to ensure you have enough housing to grow the city quickly without having to build stuff to create more housing (housing essentially caps your population, and population is the number of tiles your city can actually utilise at any one time). You want a balance of food and production, so things like rainforest are good as they provide food and production, but otherwise a balance of plains Hills and forest are good to aim for. There are other factors as well but those are essential.

Culture allows you to expand the borders of your city faster and also is the currency for your civics research so it's important, and it also affects how other civs see you (some are impressed for instance). Unlike earlier civ games, there isn't a penalty for building loads of cities so expanding quickly is generally worth doing now. Building a settler does halt growth of the city that builds it as it takes a citizen away, so settling too early can stall your early growth. I tend to turtle a bit at the start and build infrastructure asap, a couple of early wonders if I can, and then build military strength once I have a good economy (trade routes are your friend here).

Hope that helps a bit.

I haven't played all the civs yet, but that list looks suspect to me. Sumeria is easily tier one for me. The War Cart is probably the best unique unit in the game and they can build it from turn one. Scythia is much higher than tier 3 as well.

Agreed, tomyris is almost OP

War Cart is one of those things that crops up in a game release / expansion that is so clearly overpowered that you have to expect it'll get a nerf. It alone makes the otherwise lacklustre Sumeria tier one for me too.

Only the Ziggurat unique building is lacklustre. The ability to get goody hut rewards from clearing barbarians out is very underrated, as the rewards don't downscale in later eras like they do in Civ 5. You can continue to get eurekas and inspirations all the way through the game which is very powerful, and the barbs pop up all the time so it doesn't take much effort. Also, the leader ability to share experience and pillage rewards doesn't actually require you to be declared allies, just not at war with someone. Sending some units to "observe" a war between other civs or city states gets you a pretty powerful promotions for nothing.

Game definitely takes noticeably longer to load turns than Civ V and I've done the windows defender thing.

Declared my first 'holy war' last night as Germany was naughty and kept converting my city after he said he would stop. 1 turn later que 5 animations of the rest of the world all denouncing me for warmongering. It was my first fight of the game :(

I was going for a score victory and didn't want to start a war so started demanding things and parking troops at Germany's border to provoke him into starting it but he never did :) just gave me luxury resources and kept denouncing me, so converted all his cities to my religion.
