Clocking Advice/Tips Needed

The P5K has terrible vdroop associated with this board. To compensate for this extra core voltage is required. So yes, technically the mother board is limiting your O/C unless you are able to provide a better cooling solution.

Alternatively there's a pencil vdroop mod for that board, might be worth doing. (if you feel confident enough)

Instructions here http://www.overclock.net/motherboard-volt-mods/223188-asus-p5kc-vdroop-pencil-mod.html

albeit the other alternative is possibly to upgrade to another motherboard?

You can get around the MS system by simply saying that you replaced the motherboard with the closest one available of the same type after you had a problem with your original.

Both the automated system and the Indian call centre will issue a new activation key if you give them that response.

Technically, you aren't quite playing the game according to the licencing, but MS would far rather you bought a genuine licence and used it legitimately on one PC than you bought a hacked copy from a market-trader.

Well, ordinarily, I would have suggested the Gigabyte P35-DS4, but unless you can get a Rev 1.0 (the one with the gigantic heatsinks), I'd probably go for one of the Abit IP35 boards, or, if you can stand being a guinea-pig, what about one of the new OcUK Value IP-35 Pro boards?

Or you could just stick with what you have, and accept a lower than potentially possible overclock, rather than spend more money trying to chase down 300-400MHz.

Upped the Vcore to 1.58 so it shows 1.5 in CPUID and upped the FSB so now it runs at 3.2Mhz.

Trouble is the temps are:

Idle: 40/41c
Load: over 65c plus topped 71c

Are these temps ok and will the CPU take it!

Tempted to lap the CPU and cooler to see if that lowers the temps a bit.

Regards.

Just found this:

Scale 2: Quad
Q6x00: Tcase Max 71c, G0 Stepping, Tjunction Max 100c, Vcore Default 1.372, TDP 95w, Delta 10c

-Tcase/Tjunction-
--70--/--80--80--80--80-- Hot
--65--/--75--75--75--75-- Warm
--60--/--70--70--70--70-- Safe
--25--/--35--35--35--35-- Cool

My max temps are showing warm to safe so if I drop the vcore I'll see if it runs ok and hence get the temps down.

Guys,

I lapped my Freezer Pro 7 and the Q6600 but when I stuck it all back together the temps rocketed 70 plus. I reset the CPU and cooler and found that one of the clips was not catching the mobo hole so I ordered a new cooler.

I now have installed the new cooler (un-touched) and the temps have only dropped 5 deg per core, is that OK?

Idle was at:

49
48
45
45

Now its, well as I write this:

46
46
43
43

Is the differance between each core normal as above or am I thinking that the lapping made things worse?

Regards.

Lapping has not mad it worse. It is know to have variation between the two cores.

Did you check for flatness when you finished with he fine grit using the permanent marker (drawing a union jack on IHS?)

When you lap the marker will come off signifying flatness or parts of the marker will come off signifying unevenness.

Hi,

No I just used wet and dry paper until what I thought was flat and checking with a sharp blade and a background light.

I might get the CPU back out and draw a jack cross of sorts and start rubbing with 1500 paper, see what goes that way.

Regards.

i take it that you put the paper on a known flat surface (like a mirror) and then moved the processor? as that's the way to get it flat...

then check it by putting the processor on the glass after you're finished, that's the easiest way to see.

Well I used 1500 and drew a jack as a guide and rubbed 10 times in all directions till the jack was removed.

Did this a few times but the base is not like a mirror as examples i've seen here.

Anyway, my temps are:

Load with OCCT:
59 58 56 54

Idle:
40 39 37 36

Tried to get all core temps the same but how far do you go in re-lapping?

Currently clocked to 3200.

Regards.

There has been a significant drop in temps. I take it you have not lapped your new cooler? (no need to).

Out of interest when did you reapply the new TIM. Today or Yesterday?
