COD Black Ops looks pretty good on PC

Yeah, it can. I had the same problem with something this year... maybe Metro. Just takes a crash or a non-clean exit.

And the reinstall process will go through and reinstall any other binaries that are required. For instance a common one is VC++.

Also, if you really think the games dont need to be installed - do a search of your computers registry... the entries in there are in the same place as if you bought the game in non-steam format generally. This happens at install time.

No... there is no pretty gui... it all happens silently... but it still happens. The difference being the files are already there and you dont get popup windows asking you questions... aside form that, all the registry entries that get registered and all the other required binaries (DirectX, VC++ etc...) all get installed exactly the same as any game.

If it didn't, it simply wouldnt work!

(Note, some games, like crappy flash games like bejeweled do not require an install and run from the folder without registry entries, but proper games, like CoD, MoH, Metro are installed properly into your computer).

If DirectX and VC++ are already up to date then it isn't necessary, Steam does it just to make sure. All that might be necessary is creating a new registry entry and that's it, which takes seconds.

A normal game install unpacks a load of archives and then writes the files to their new home in another folder. Steam doesn't do that because it downloads all the files uncompressed in the first place and runs them from that folder. So it isn't just that there is no installer GUI. There is a fundamental difference between Steam and every other method of game installation (including Games For Windows and EA Store which despite being digital distribution platforms, still install games as if you were installing them off the retail disc.)

When you install a game that requires DirectX it checks that your libraries are up to date / newer at the time of install only.

We are not questioning the Steam folder, you suggested that Steam games do not get installed and therefore you can't reinstall them... I am stating that you are wrong and if a user is having game startup issues, the first troubleshooting step would be a reinstall.

To avoid redownloading it, you can trick steam into thinking that it has never been instaled by deleting a file... it will then rerun it's install procedure which can and will fix any issues with the installation.

Basically it copies them from a DVD to a folder yeah... while Steam copies them from the internet to a folder. Files in a folder is not enough to play a game.

Your posts however, have wandered massively away from the fact that a user was having an issue and i suggested a fix which is valid and you will only have to look on Steams forums to see it is a common way to fix such issues.

Have to say since the last patch the stuttering is pretty much gone. FPS still poor and map loading takes forever now but it's playable.

1 random thing that irks me is the delay before you can knife lunge after firing the sniper rifle (bolt action). if you get caught close quarters and try a noscope and miss it takes ages before you can knife

I came home from uni pretty much the day of the patch and found the game a million times more playable but I don't know whether that was due to one of two reasons:

1) The patch

2) Switching from a stock i3 530 system at uni to an E8600 @4Ghz at home (same GPU in both)

Either way I've actually started enjoying the game now and it shows as my k:d has gone up by 25% since being home :)

Lol I've come home from Uni and enjoy the game a lot more now Im getting steady 50ping (BT) as opposed to so called 10MB virgin media broadband... download speed on VM is brilliant but the pings are ridiculous. Unplayable. Optics in Uni and standard connection at home and home is a lot better!

Hope virgin media sort this!

Got it going again, verified files through steam. Still runs terrible though on my sli setup, have to use a single card to get it to run without any stuttering. Think ill stick with BC2 tbh.

CFLOPS Hits 1 Billion in revenues: Source.

We can only imagine what would happen if a scantily clad Megan Fox appeared in the next CoD game.

Perhaps with this kind of extra funding we might see a new engine within the next 2 years?

why waste money on a more intensive engine when you're still limited to today's hardware?

Just use the old one and slap on an extra $10.

Supposedly Treyarch started development of this game, straight after WAW and during MW2.

Thats why the engine looks the same. No doubt the next COD is currently in developement. This one 'Might' use a different engine as it entered developement as soon as MW2 was finished.....
