Try setting your Windows sound to 16bit/44khz and downclock your CPU to 3.1 ish.

i have it on telephone quality all the way to the max, each step of the way, crashign everytime.
sometimes 10 mins in, sometimes 10s. i shall try stock clcoks

You really cannot judge a game's single player capabilities by disk size.

My mate has probs getting a decent framerate with a 512mb 4870. I had a 1Gb variant and it was fine, though he also has a quad, it isn't overclocked and I assumed this was the root of his problem.
Blops is dodgy, period. It defies logic at times, we know this, however, from my perspective, I have mine set up like this and it's smooth as silk:
CCC settings all set by application, ensure AA mode is set to Performance (MSAA).
Catalyst AI - Quality (test and drop if required)
VSync - Off
In-game:
AA 8x (was 2x with 4870)
Trilinear
Tex Qual: Extra
AF: Full
Shader Warming - No
Shadows - No
Bullets - Aye
Config File Tweaks:
seta com_maxfps "0"
seta cl_maxpackets "100"
seta snaps "30"
seta r_multiGpu "0"
seta r_multithreaded_device "1"

All down to the ****** spawn system in black ops... could do similiar in COD with the HQ game mode - chain airstrikes on the enemy spawn until you were 300+ to 0 type scores (at which point usually got kicked and banned by admin).
EDIT: Haven't checked if its true or not but apparently in typical treyarch fashion instead of fixing their game they've banned the players doing it.......................
