COD Black Ops looks pretty good on PC

Call of Duty Black Ops: £39.99 on the steam store.

Call of Duty Black Ops: £29.99 on the usual big online retailers.

you need a steam account to even play the game at all. retail or digital... it is exactly the same. so the retail copy with a box and disk and
manual is cheaper than a digital download with minimal production and
distribution costs.

surely running a download server array is cheaper than ferrying boxed product everywhere

can someone please explain why this bizzare logic has been employed.
I fail to accept that it is dictated by just the publishers.

Bandwidth cost of uploading potentially millions of gigabytes' worth of data won't come cheap at all! Valve also has a cut on *everything* that's sold on Steam and I'd imagine Activision wants to compensate for that.

as knvies says there's the supporting downloads forever so 1 game could be downloaded 1000 times by one customer, instead of just 1 disk, but also the publisher sets the price and they're a) greedy, b0 not wanting to **** off the bricks an mortar stores who make up the majority of their business.

You can't exactly turn around to your main distributors and say "hey guys we're under cutting you lolz!" and not expect some pretty harsh repercussions.

server disti has gotta cost less than producing a physical product and disti for that product though surely?

ok put it another way, if logitech said they where going to sell all their products direct from their website at the same cost they sell them to shops, do you think ocuk etc would continue to stock them knowing they could never match the price?

Until digital distribution becomes the normal and the major market they aren't going to **** off bestbuy/gamestop/wallmart.

How graphically demanding will the game be? I'm considering buying it as from what I have read it sounds like the first CoD game since the second one that I am actually interested in playing with regards to the story etc. But my PC isn't too great:

Dual-Core E2180 @ 3GHz
2GB Corsair XMS2 PC6400 memory, usually about 1.6GB free when at desktop with nothing running
GTX 260 216 core, 896MB
Gaming resolution is always 1680 x 1050 and I like 2xAA aswell.

Worth buying for the PC or should I go console? (Although I only own a PS3 these days).

Your GPU will be fine with doubt. CPU, probably. RAM, maybe, but I know MW2 uses around 1.5GB of RAM on my machine!

You think that a COD game will be churned out every XMAS?

Like the EA franchises etc.

That was Kotick's plan, wasn't it? There was that speech last year about how Activision has no interest in titles that cannot be exploited year after year across multiple platforms.

Edit: Which is why I haughtily disdain people for continuing to buy in to the same crap year after year. I taught one of my dogs to open the back door by herself, now I'm teaching her to turn the key if it happens to be locked. It's taken two years and she's just got the hang of nibbling at the key, so we've got a long way to go yet, but she still learns faster than some of you people. Jesus Christ.

It does. However, activation take less profit from a Steam sale. Valve take a bigger share than retail outlets presumably.

The Steam price is set to encourage people not to buy from there by Activision.

Doesn't explain the OcUK price though.
