Coffee machines, Tassimo or Nespresso?

These were £129 at John Lewis, £179-£199 on their website at the time. New device and pod system that is much better for those who like a mug or even large thermo mug as they have pods for all those sizes. I believe it's Nespresso looking to kill off the 'emulation' market as I am told they have a strong patent on these and the tech on the pods. I bought 300 pods of all sorts to try out and like all Nespresso it makes a good consistent cuppa but I have one issue. They have gone for extra frothing and for me they have gone OTT with it. I makes each coffee look like a mini Guinness!

Been looking at the Nespresso lattissimo one coffee machine, has anyone got it and can say if it’s good or not or can recommend another one. Found this one in John Lewis for £150 with £50 of free capsules! Got a £100 JL voucher so thought it be a good for a coffee machine.

in particular, if there are no 3rd party capsules yet, consider the annual cost of capsules with your likely consumption, there is a price for convenience;
and if you are drinking 4+ coffees a day you could have better quality drinks, and break even cost, in a year versus buying something like a barista express, or a less expensive de'longhi taking either ground coffee or standard pods. I posted comparisons in earlier posts.

last time I looked, I thought many of the latssimo machines were sharing the same chassis/pump/heating/centrifuge-mechanism too, with some distinctions on milk frothing/management capability.

edit: I'm wrong lattissimo is older style machine with 3rd party cartridges, I think I would prefer that over newer (vertuoline/centrifuge) with more expensive/unique cartridges , newer ones currently £120
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nespresso-Vertuo-Titanium-finish-Krups/dp/B075DL6QXW currently
probably because of lack of 3rd party cartridges

edit2: amazon page was still open noticed they have a heap of the above 'knocked box' £80,
at that price buy one and they will probably crack the 3rd party capsules soon. - same as housey shows

I would probably have around 3/4 a day and I’m usually only home for around a week per month so maybe use 20/25 ish per month maybe so the freebies would keep me going a bit till I found what I like best. Usually drink cappuccino, flat white and lattes, I’ve read a few reviews about the machine not emptying the full amount of milk that you put in the attachment, kinda put me off a bit. Still set on a nespresso machine, but which one I’m not sure yet. Would like to make use of my £100 JL vouchers and add a bit of cash, nothing else I’d buy from there really!

After having gone through a Dolce Gusto (rubbish) and a Tassimo (not much better) I finally bought a Latissima Pro Nespresso machine six months ago. The Nespresso shop tried to sell me one if their newer Vertuo machines, which do mug sized drinks but as they don't come with milk carafes yet I said no.

The Latissima Pro is *excellent* for making both black and milky coffees at home - also there are *lots* of inexpensive 3rd party capsules you can buy with my personal favourite being Taylor of Harrogates' Hot Lava Java pods which I have as a lungo black coffee with pouring cream.

The machine cost me £360 but is well worth it in my opinion as I use it every day now.

LOL looks like nespresso have bought George back back for xmas
(the adverts looks as though they might be better than new channel4 "The first" ... they have just re-used Challenger crash footage ! bad taste)

Hotuk suggested Virtuoline refills are ~60P each , so 3-4day ... unless you are comparing with Starbucks - is expensive £50 a month !
nespresso site appears to want your credit card # before it will reveal prices ... maybe you can ring up and negotiate like for Sky TV.

Think I’m going to wait till Black Friday see if I can get a lattisimo touch or pro, think maybe the “one” is the cheap version going by the reviews?
must have just missed it just put channel 4’s the first off

good point - looks like Amazon have ecam 4200's < £300 .. and then only the beans,
@4 cups a day would be break even after a year, vs nespresso
Definitely worth it if you're having more than one or two coffees a day.
So many more options for beans as well.
Always some sales on bean to cup machines near Xmas as well, black Friday and what not.

I had a Nespresso for 2.5 years and went to a bean to cup in May. My biggest gripes with Nespresso was that the coffee was slightly too cool and it didn’t make a nice large Americano coffee without using more than 1 pod (personal tastes will differ).

The bean to cup is more expensive to start ~170 for a Delonghi machine. I went for one with an automatic milk frothing part and being honest I wouldn’t bother if I had to but again, the system works well but I tend to use plain milk. The coffee is better and can make a cup full of strong flavourful coffee. I haven’t done the maths on pods vs beans, but I’m fairly sure the beans will save me money in the long run. It’s worth trying one particularly if you are getting in to the pricey Nespresso machines.

I've used a Nespresso machine for a couple of years too, I started using refillable capsules which I fill with coffee from Rave so I'm saving a lot of money compared to buying official pods. I'll definitely be buying a bean to cup when the Nespresso machine eventually dies

I originally said that about the Pixie I had, I have up after 2 years, it's still going now. Not sure what to do with it.

you hadn't swapped to bean to cup yet, although you discussed models a while back ? I thought you were going to say what you chose.

The weight of the nespresso coffee 5-6g, must be a bit annoying too if you want a longer drink/double; I use ~11g coffee and deliver 50-60ml.

Yes.
Years ago I decided to switch when the pixie broke. It never did so swapped anyway. Had the been to cup about a year now I think, already posted on this thread what I got.
Love that my bean to cup has a filter mode and will deliver a full mug as well. The day little shots from an Nespresso meant I was using 2 or 3 pods each time. Easily did 10 pods a day in.

Same issue. I went from a nice big Rancillio Silvia + Rocky, down to a little Pixie as a quick fix (120CHF but with 130CHF of capsules). A year later and although i am wanting better than a nespresso, I don;t think I want the faff of a full on espresso + grinder, space is also an issue now. Kind of want a bean to cup but I don't like the quality of the cheaper ones. I have tried some Jura bean-2-cup and the result are great, but then then cost 1.5-2K. It will take a long time to make that back form nespresso capsules.

Oh dear. This time last year I began looking at coffee pod machines but bills etc got in the way so I said to myself I'd look again this same time next year. Here I am.

Gents I have been looking at the Tassimo Vivy machine to jump into the world of convenience coffee for now. It will get occasional use - maybe once a day or 3-4 times a week. At the moment this machine is going cheap for £30 at Currys, however the Tassimo webby is doing one for £50 with 3x packs (doesn't state the pod quantity though) and I was wondering if anyone knew how reliable these machines were, despite the tiny tank? I've got about £50 tops to spend on a machine right now so it isn't really much to go on.

I've had my T65 for 8 years, it's still going strong. It was the high-end one at the time but ultimately they'll all be using similar internals so as long as you look after it, there's no reason for it not to last ages.

The Currys offer for the Happy is the better deal, and you'll get two £10 discount codes after registering to use on the Tassimo online store to use on your first two orders there. Plus it's the newer machine, although it does appear to just be a redesigned Vivy.

The small tank might be a slight annoyance but it does at least encourage you to use fresh water rather than leaving it sitting, especially if it's not always getting regular use.

^Forgot to say thanks for the info.

After weighing up my options, I decided to look at a Nespresso setup instead, probably a Nespresso Vertuo Krups machine or similar as I really require coffee rather than the range of drinks Tassimo offers. Despite the fact that I'll be using it only occasionally I don't like the idea of using plastic pods over the alu ones and we have a recycling place just down the road from us too for them. I'll stretch to about £120 for a machine and keep an eye on the upcoming sales to see if I can get a good bargain.
