4800 Series cards will be in testing for a little while to check various things i.e. they don't melt the laptopsand we will then update our range to include these.
Hi Slackworth,
Can I ask what you mean by ultraportables? 7"-10" or more 11"-14"?
This tangent is getting more and more interesting...
ps3ud0![]()
Hehe, heard they were finished, but ATI were holding it til the range was complete. Still the non melting the laptops part should perhaps be pointed out to Dell/Alienware, I hear thier early M15x laptops suffered some....issues shall we say due to heat, involving oh so minor things like the cases beginning to crack under heat![]()
On a more serious note, the 15" with the 9800GTS looks quite nice and powerful for the size (although apparently the 9800GT benchmarks stronger for some reason, presumably because it has 50% more stream processors where the GTS has higher clocks; NV going off the deep end with naming again it seems as GT shouldnt be stronger than GTS), but do you have any plans to incorporate any more powerful laptop graphics chips in a small 15" model, or perhaps a similar chip in a 14" model?
I understand perhaps these might not be feasible but they're not easy to get in the UK so thought it worth asking, as for people who don't want a large laptop but want to play some games this is a relevant question![]()
For the 9800 GPUs, from most powerful to least powerful: GTX, GT, GTS. They have changed the convention for the mobile GPUs, not sure why.
I've only seen the GTS and GT offered in the 15.4" notebooks, I think putting in a GTX just generates too much heat for the notebook to dissipate. If you want the GTX I believe you must move up to a 17" notebook. The 9800M GT is supposed to be on par with the 8800M GTX performance wise, that may be your best bet.
I was hoping a few more details would be released about release time as I think quite a few people here are heading off to university and would like a laptop before then. I know it's not easy to give out exactly what people want to know, but is there any more news on this yet? I would also really like to know which ODM overclockers are using for the chassis.
I can certainly ask.![]()
I think they're trying to be extra careful to avoid heat problems, understandable.
I've put my pre-order in now, I want it asapHopefully if more configuration options become available I'll be able to amend my order and keep my place in the queue.
I like that idea!!!
Your place in the queue will be secured!! ....and it's getting larger by the day...but don't worry we've done what OcUK always does...buy a decent amount of stock.
Cheers,
