Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

whenever the en-uk becomes available is it safe to install this ontop of Windows 8 pro?

Should I use my win 8 pro activation key or the one provided with the preview?

I don't want to inadvertently mess up my copy of windows 8 with using the wrong key.

For those stuck on the store download page try this.

Navigate over to:
Control Panel\Clock, Language and Region\Language
(Can just search for "language" in settings / Win+w)
and add new language which is English (United States). Go into the options of this new language and download and install language pack. A system restart is prompted, BUT WAIT. Not just yet.

Go into the registry editor (run regedit, exe) and navigate to HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Language and change the "InstallLanguage" string at the very bottom of the right pane to the value 0409 which is EN-US.

(You can remember what it was originally if you want to change it back after installation)

Now reboot.

After reboot, just run the update file from preview.windows.com and voila....

This worked for me, downloading now.

"setting up" at the fish splash screen is stuck at 82%.

edit - after 20 mins it's finally moved and finished.

now it's "getting devices ready" and "applying pc settings" after a reboot

so don't restart if it seems to be doing nowt.

The set up does seem to take a bloody long time.

I'm on "almost ready", I swear it said that half an hour ago.

yup, now "applying pc settings" is stuck at 3%
I thought my PC froze before and I was just about to reboot it, luckily I didn't.

I have an SSD and it's taking over 20 mins so far, windows 8 was done in about 8-10 mins.

RT, Pro?

Preview releases are always slower

You do realise that when you perform an install it uses a pre configured wim via the recovery partition. This will be installing windows from scratch

This is a beta, it's not finished, it's not optimised etc.

To many people install betas and treat them as a finished product.

Sorry I should have been more clear

I installed Windows 8.1 Preview over my existing Windows 8 Pro with media centre add-on

After installation it retained all my apps, documents and settings etc. I cannot find media centre though.

Loving the new store, but then the old one was terrible.

It left a Windows.Old folder on my Surface Pro.

I need to space, I can't see any option to remove it via any menus etc, OK to just trash it?

Help guys,

I followed the instructions above but still get the error about 'try again later'

at least it's not weird text now

I never had weird text.
What device you on?
My RT is on "Setting up a few more things 80%" after downloading and it wanting to reboot...
