Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

x64 : SHA1: D8076E029292FBC933792D215793045031255FF6

From MSDN.

I was trying to figure out whether the SHA-1 hash was wrong or the ISO. I downloaded it twice and it wasn't matching. I tried again today and the ISO checks out, so I'm not sure what was wrong to be honest.

After i have downloaded an iso. If from MSDN, I usually copy the SHA1 from the site an stick into Hashtab, in the .iso file properties. If its different, then its usually gone bad while downloading.

When the final product releases, will it install/update straight over a Windows 8 install with no problems? Just like Windows 8 did from Windows 7?

Although I love the look of it, going to wait until the final release before I install it on my desktop / media pc / surface rt

Can't be bothered with fiddling around

Grrrr!!!

RT 8.1 is not compatible with Dell XPS 10 Tablet WTF!!!!! WHY?
Make sure you have all the updated drivers on your machine first - I vaguely remember reading something about it not liking older video drivers. Have you followed the same steps for installing detailed for Surface RT above?

Navigate over to:
Control Panel\Clock, Language and Region\Language
(Can just search for "language" in settings / Win+w)
and add new language which is English (United States). Go into the options of this new language and download and install language pack. A system restart is prompted, BUT WAIT. Not just yet.

Go into the registry editor (run regedit, exe) and navigate to HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Nls\Language and change the "InstallLanguage" string at the very bottom of the right pane to the value 0409 which is EN-US.

(You can remember what it was originally if you want to change it back after installation)

Now reboot.

After reboot, just run the update file from preview.windows.com and voila....

Yeah tbh I needed to do one anyway so it's not too bad just a bit of a pain.

stick with win8 unless you are ok with a temperamental system, this is a beta.

loving the auto snap, when clicking on certain links/pictures.
so simple but a nice touch.
so many apps are broke, all youtube apps seem to be broken, Netflix works, but once in a film the pop up menu at the bottom doesn't work and the pop up menu at the top for the back button doesn't work.
so looks like a ton of apps will need an update, if companies don't get ontop of that before official release, it'll make MS look bad.

I'm pretty sure when I was installing it clearly states that all Windows 8 (Metro) apps will work with 8.1, but 8.1 apps won't work with windows 8.
My only hope is that with 8.1 they've removed a lot of the limitations with their Windows store, I bet a lot of missing app's are down to that, I know that's the reasoning VLC player are giving.

EPSXE developers said that they couldn't release a PS1 emulator due to limitations.

Vlc aren't giving up.
The reason VLC is finding it hard, is there trying to port a non comparable system to the store. Rather than starting again like other companies, but then they advent made apps for other systems either.

Well lots of apps don't work, be interesting if other people have got the same, if they work for other people then ill try a reinstall.

I know VLC aren't giving up, they're just struggling due to calls/symbols etc. Ergo, limitations.

VLC's problem isn't a working app, it's making their application compliant with MS's "guidelines" that is the problem, it's not MS Store acceptable.

It's not so much limitations(other than being forced down a certain path), it's trying to use incompatable calls. High they are having to change, if they just wrote a new app, rather than trying to port, they would have been done months ago. The apps are actually very easy to program, porting is harder, as its a very different system and unlike windows not open to any old structure/calls.

And no Ms won't open it up.
It brings massive advantages having it limited. It doesn't have to support any old tat programmed in 10million different ways. Which means visual studio now does ******* everything for you. should have watched the keynote yesterday, visual studio has always been good at sorting all the back end code for you, but now it basically does everything, want push notifications, go through a simple settings menu, fill it in and it create all th back end code which works straight away, then just modify it to your needs.

Semantics.
It's still restrictions, you can bet it's these reasons why we're missing a crap ton of apps.
And IIRC, you were touting how easy it was for developers to port their app's in many of your pro W8 posts.

It is very easy, between windows 8 platforms, that's still true. Eg from win8 to winRT to wp8
And no it's not samantaics.

They have however added thousands of new APIs etc. (5000 new APis to be precise in win8.1, so that will make it easier to port conventional stuff, but it still means a total reprogram to use windows8 APis and not what ever mix they currently use)

And no it's not the reason we're missing most stuff, iOS is even more locked down.
It's marketshare. Something's won't function due to no support, but that is tiny compared to what can run.
