Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

Not going to get market share till there's app's.
You still can't play MKV's for free properly on RT, PressPlay video player doesn't really count, stutters on the vast majority of MKV's.

Being locked down isn't quite the same as the restrictions I'm on about.
Point in question ; iOS can and has PS1 emulators, RT can't due to forbidden calls, so yes, restrictions are causing problems.

you are massively over stating what cant be done.

MKV playback is not a technical issue, just no ones made a decent app. VLC is showing it can be done, even if they are doing it the complicated way.

There's no reason all the top apps cant be on the platform. The biggest issue is market share. Its a bit chicken and egg, but the problem we have atm, is pretty rubbish spec hardware at the top dollar prices. Now qaulcomm 800, baytrail and haswell should solve this all withmnuch high res screens, they will now be mixing it up at the top on hardware, it just needs to be a competitive price.
Most of the top apps are here, with several more confirmed in development.

As for ios doing emulators aren't they all on jail broken devices? circumventing everything.

Which is why MS are paying app developers, to try and brake the chicken and egg routine.

I'm not massively overstating anything.
VLC have documented the troubles they're having in porting, the point is that this could also be a reason why others are struggling.

And there are limitations, and I've given an example (With an even more locked eco system)

Downplay it as much as you want to though, but I'm not overstating them in the slightest, I just said that the limitations are there, and it could be a reason to a lack in the porting of apps.

yes you are over stating it, what do yyou think app developers had to do for IOS, just rebundle a mac/windows app?

if you right new you have no issue, which is what most app developers do. If you port like VLC are doing then you hit issues, but they have got the list down from hundreads to a handful.

This is not the reason we haven't got apps, compared to IOS

and I'm not down playing it at all.
\Adding more apius, will open up more potential for app developers and make it easier, but it still requires a full rewrite(depending on how its programed to start with) but again this is not a the reason for 99% of apps.

and jailbroken /= ios

Working well so far, might actually start using the start menu now you can have small tiles.

I think that may actually sway a few more people towards it if I'm honest but I could be completely wrong :p, It should have really been an option from the start, You can fit way more tiles there.

I'm going to hold off installing it on both the desktop & laptop, Tried on the desktop but it wouldn't even install the first file you download from the Microsoft site.

Just found a feature I've been waiting for.

Choose how to open links!!

I like to use the official twitter app snapped next to my desktop on my PC and it always annoyed me when it opened links in metro ie.

As said earlier, to get it working on a EN-GB system (UK), do this..

Navigate over to:
Control Panel\Clock, Language and Region\Language
(Can just search for "language" in settings / Win+w)
and add new language which is English (United States). Go into the options of this new language and download and install language pack. A system restart is prompted, BUT WAIT. Not just yet.

Go into the registry editor (run regedit, exe) and navigate to HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Nls\Language and change the "InstallLanguage" string at the very bottom of the right pane to the value 0409 which is EN-US.

(You can remember what it was originally if you want to change it back after installation)

Now reboot.

After reboot, just run the update file from preview.windows.com and voila....

Then use the 'Get the update' link here

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/preview-download

I think I then rebooted and went into the store where it prompted me to download the whole update. Maybe took an hour to do this? I was AFK..

I had to install gfx card drivers again after the install.

I have a small issue with the NVidia 8.1 drivers in that youtube videos flicker in IE11.

EDIT: Disabling GPU acceleration in IE settings fixes this.

I installed the latest nvidia beta drivers, games and youtube seem fine. I use Chrome though.

Are you using any of the youtube apps? They either freeze about two seconds after launching in the UI (metro tube) or the video just doesn't do anything when you hit play, not even the button changes (all the other youtube apps I've tried)

I did download a Nvidia update through Windows update so I assume that was the latest version of the drivers.
