u could use a blacklisted 8.1 key to install it then change the key to your 8 key within windows to activate.

Might have to try that. So the problem is just getting through the install and what key to use. Once windows is up and running it should authenticate with no problems using the old Windows 8 serial.

Is it me or are 90% of the apps in the store rather rubbish and not worth installing? even if they are for free. Just a lot of rubbish to wade through.

Fairly harmless update, downloaded in the background, took about 30mins. Reboot and install took about 15 mins. Back into Windows... only noticeable difference was the return of the much called for "Windows button". It made me chuckle when I pressed it and it took me to the start screen.

I've never really understood why there was such a big fuss tbh... *shrug*

yes should..

it's like the leaked win8.1 rtm u had to use a blacklisted 8.1 key to install it then change the key to your 8 key within windows to activate.

that what I thought has it's a upgrade key..

I could but the point is that we should not have to jump through hoops (in a dubious way) to achieve this.

Why to Microsoft make it so hard to do this, why is an 8.0 key invalid on 8.1 when everybody gets the free upgrade anyway? I can't remember but was an 8.0 clean install supported by Microsoft with an upgrade key, or legally do we have to go through the 7->8.0->8.1 install route now? I guess it goes back to the old upgrade key vs retail issues we had with XP/Vista/7. They must have good licensing reasons but then also messing up the (useful) "system reset" option is annoying.

Is there any simple way to make a Windows 8 or 8.1 usb installer within Windows? I have 8.1 installed on my PC now, so just wondering if there is some feature that does it for you?

Bit odd that you are forced to set up a Windows Account to continue the install. My wife uses a local account on her laptop, had to pull the network cable out during install and then it let me continue without having to use a Windows account.

Oh, and the update appears to have uninstalled Avast, but since there was a new version I wonder if that was the real cause...

It can easily be avoided though it is not logical or clear, if you go to the register new account screen there is an option at the bottom to continue using current (local) account.

People who called themselves "power users" and "experts" didn't know what to do, there world fell apart and couldn't locate the corner of their screens without a big target to aim for.

wow! what an absolute shambles to install. had to reset my 8.0 to my initial installation to get the 8.1 loaded up in Store.

Cheers Bill..lol

99.9% but thats the same in ios and android. Unless your 14 and stupid your not meant too install everything. Just what you need, which depends on well what you need.

So I have:
netflix (better than website)
audible(better than desktop app),
outdoor maps (better than website),
metrotube,
Bing news (which is brilliant),
built in mail app (so i can see when i have mail, rather than logging into outlook & yahoo all the time),
package tracker (great if you have lots of parcels or order lots online),
weather app (better than a lot of websites and live tiles means i can just see basic info without opening up a webpage),
onenote,
livestrong myplate(although website is better),
worldmate
Bing food (save my recipes there and make shopping lists)
Ocado

Using the trial of nextgen reader (rss), don't use many rss so not sure its worth the money.

Oh and appflow which is good for browsing decent apps, it prunes out the garbage.

unplugged the mouse ,still hangs, just looked on Steelseries site and the drivers for 8.1 kill it and the drivers for 8 do not work on 8.1 they say at Steelseries,

been reading more,it is the Steelseries drivers ,keyboard and mouse, headsets not working right in win 8.1 also they are stopping win 8 from updating to win 8.1 and theres no fix yet

Well that is a total ball-ache as my Steelseries keyboard does not have any drivers. It is a 6gV2. I thought it might be it as all the lights got stuck on during the upgrade.

Just wondering if it is worth trying to do it with nothing plugged in.
