Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

Managed to upgrade my PC and a couple of work tablets fine using the official ISO I managed to download. All these are running Windows 8 Pro (I entered the generic key to start the install then changed the key manually).

However when I try the same with my wife's laptop it won't accept the Generic core key that we've seen branded about - says its not for this version of windows.

Thought the ISO download was both core and pro version? Anyone successfully got a clean install completed on a core only setup pls?

Upgraded my Win8 install. On the first attempt it got stuck at the BIOS (my Dell 14z seems to do this during most Windows updates) but on the second it worked fine. I had to unplug my router so that I could get past the Windows account stage without supplying one and spent a good hour re-tweaking StartIsBack but I'm now in a position with all of the advantages of Win8.1 and still a 'functional' OS. I'm happy - If only MS bundled Win8.1 with StartIsBack it'd be perfect ;) Still, $3 for 2 licenses... Who's complaining? :)

It looks like M$ has kept up with its attitude of taking necessary items out of the OS as they took out a video codec out of 8 which rendered one game I have unplayable unless I removed the file it couldn't play properly, and now they've taken another video codec and a font out of 8.1 breaking one game beyond repair and rendering a majority of the text in another game completely unreadable.

It looks like I'll have to start rooting through that windows.old folder to find what I can to try and get at least one of those games back in working order (at least I've got windows XP on another computer, so it isn't a total loss).

and nerfed the useful backup stuff. :(

Where can I download this for my desktop?

Follow these steps to download the Windows 8.1 ISO.

Go here Upgrade Windows with only a product key - Microsoft Windows Help scroll down and click on both 'Install Windows 8' and 'Install Windows 8.1'
Run the Windows 8 setup and enter your retail Windows 8 key, click next and when i begins downloading, STOP it! Exit setup.
Now run the the Windows 8.1 setup. It will produce and error. Exit and then run Windows 8.1 setup again.
It should now be downloading the Windows 8.1 ISO. Afterwards you can save it as an ISO or create the USB media immediately.

Sorted it by running this command in IE

ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade

Once I did that, I had a download prompt in the store show up. (no % done window though)

Checked Task Manager and it was downloading, left it for an hour or so and I had a 'click ok to install' prompt.

It's just completed
