Control Resonant

I've not had much chance to get started with the game yet, what Ray Tracing settings are others running, I started with Ultra and FGx2, but then knocked it back to High. Does High still get you Path tracing?

Yeah the path tracing is the "Indirect Lighting" option which is enabled in some form on all presets, I think higher settings for it increase the number of light bounces. High seems to be the optimal setting for path tracing/indirect lighting due to very little visual difference with Ultra.

I'm just running the Medium preset so that I don't have to use FG, and it still looks pretty good.

Ultra unlocks transparency setting since it needs mega geometry and ray reconstruction:

RT Ultra combines the highest path-tracing setting with maximum ray-traced direct lighting and transparency. It requires both RTX Mega Geometry and DLSS Ray Reconstruction.

Using max setting with dlss perf and x3 fg here on a 5080 at 4k, plays and looks incredible.

Oh it does indeed, I suppose this would be a good example of that where more light is cast from the phone box:

There's certainly a bigger difference with medium vs high overall, but this is a nice feature in places for sure.

There's a big difference between High and Ultra for 'Direct Lighting' though so...

It's good to keep the 'direct lighting' setting on Ultra if you can, then reduce 'indirect lighting' (path tracing) first if you're looking for more performance.

The past 10 hours has trained me to mash the execute button whenever I see it in combat. I have now been given a new traversal ability, that uses the same button as the execute move. Now when the prompt appears in battle it's a 50/50 chance I will be executing an enemy or finding myself on top of a nearby roof top

Thanks for the advice, I can safely max all settings and then drop Indirect Lighting back to High, keeps me around the 100FPS mark and everything feels smooth and responsive.

do u need to have played the first ? not sure how i feel about the melee combat

I've tried both and IMO the gun combat in the first game is much superior.

I thought I wouldn't be a fan of the melee combat in resonant, and I'm definitely not.

Usually when I play with frame gen for a bit and then turn it off I end up keeping it off, but it works really well in this and think I'll actually stick with it. Helps that the base latency for the game is very low already.

I feel if you like Devil May Cry/Bayonetta type combat then you'll like this. There are a A LOT of combat encounters in the game, many are optional, but trying different abilities and builds etc helps keep it more fun and less repetitive. For me it's a step up from the first game for sure, more variety overall and a bit more tactical.

As someone that's not flustered by DS difficulty or say DMC on DMD difficulty, I found the game a touch frustrating at first with the serious lack of variety or skill required. It felt a bit of a chore.

I got the
yesterday and the
quest was bloody fantastic. So psychedelic and artistic. It was a beautiful, unusual experience. I really hope the rest of the game keeps that standard up.

I havent got the game yet but its very much how i think id feel. Not sure why they needed to go 100% melee.

It's certainly not quite in the same league as some of the best melee action games, but it's really scratching that itch for me and does open up a bit as you unlock stuff.

In the gameplay 'Assist Mode' settings you can also make the game harder. I bumped Enemy Aggression up to High and increased enemy damage by 50%, certainly making fights more intense.

I thought I'd click with the combat eventually but it's not very complicated and very mashy. I got to the point where I messed with the assist sliders to make it less of a chore to get through encounters. I'm into the story but tonally, I think I prefer the first game.

How are you guys getting on with KB + M? I wondered if melee was basically built for a controller which I have but do not care for.
I found the opposite; I started on controller but wasn't getting on with it. To get it to work I'd have had to spend a while remapping the paddles. Instead i switched to KB&M and much preferred it.

I'm 8 hours in now and really enjoying it. I prefer the melee combat to weapons because it's a bit different and refreshing, for me at least. I've been running round shooting things in games for over 30 years and fun as it is, i like to mix things up. On the one hand i get what people have said above about the combat being a bit 'mash X', but as the fights get tougher, you start to see the need to use abilities in the right way, use all your abilities, take down enemies in the correct order etc etc otherwise it's easy to get swamped. Crank up the difficulty and i can see it turning into a real mental chess game. Fair play to Remedy for trying something new.

Same here. I upped the player's damage just to get through the first boss. I'm thinking about doing the same generally now as the fights are quite hard for me. I love the atmosphere and story, but I'm not really a melee combat fan. Plus it seems really stingy with ability upgrade points.

I've just unlocked the second part of the city (haven't been able to play over the weekend :((. I'm really enjoying it. I do miss the oldest house though, they probably couldn't have squeezed another game out of its location though.
