..or maybe just trying to let children actually have an uniterrupted education/normal childhood maybe ?
As Rroff said in reality all that's happened is that you've still got the high lack of attendance, but it's now not down to "covid".
At the same time removing all the safety precautions, testing and reporting is potentially going to be a disaster if the damage from covid is at all cumulative and there are already a number of studies that suggest that the more often you get it, the more likely you are to suffer longer term side effects (and that even just getting it mildly once can be causing "hidden" problems in some people that aren't showing up for years).
From one thing I was reading a few days ago there is a chance that in some people where Covid messes up their immune system it basically wipes out your previous vaccinations (not the first virus to be known to do this*), and the only way you find out is if you get specific tests for the antibody responses for those diseases done, or you get that disease (people who got things like Hepatitis vaccines, and the status of their other major ones checked due to their work finding out that they've lost their antibody response and needing to get revaccinated). For long term public health this could be a disaster as it potentially means that "herd immunity" for all sorts of vaccinated diseases may fall below the level needed for public safety.
I've said it before, my sister has now had covid ~3 times in 12 months (twice in about 3 months), my grand nephew had it twice in ~3 months, my nephew has had it twice. in a few months, and there seems to be no telling how bad you'll get it from one infection to the next, my sister was far worse the third time, my nephew was bad the first, and my grandnephew barely showed any symptoms either time (but managed to infect his whole family - over half his class was off ill with it**).
We're still basically learning how covid works, so to just say "well get on with it, no need to worry" is a very carefree attitude to have, and is looking increasingly likely it's going to come back and bite people on the butt to some extent or another, I just hope it's not in too large a number, or too serious (and that we will have ways to cope/manage it). We're still learning about the longer term effects of all sorts of infections that cause far less immediate damage to the infected..
*IIRC one of the other common childhood virus's was found to do this, but only relatively recently after a lot of study.
**Some quite ill.
