CRZ Supercharged * 2020 revival *

Nath don't want an E46 M3, but just to comment went to Spa at weekend with a load of mates, one who has a supercharged M3, taking the speedo of the clock at 185mph+ was impressive, also the way it got there and the car was very quick on track as well, 150ish on the back straight and circa 2:45 laps. :)

For me I think Nathan could make a great car out of the CRZ, tune it to 220-240BHP, stick a pair of bucket seats in there, shorten the rear ratio and fit a diff, it would be a whole lot of fun. It would kind of be like a stage 1/2 supercharged Mini-GP and those things are great fun and great on track.

I am saying do it, because with the above it will be huge fun, very handy on track and road, but still retain the comfort and mpg's when just cruising to and from work. :)

Most Mugen products are more expensive than they are really worth - this is a well known fact - same for Spoon. Why would a supercharger kit be any different?

because the Mugen kit in parts alone is only £300 more than the Jackson racing and HKS kits.

The rest of the cost is made up of the Hondata ECU and fitting/mapping which would be indetical for the other 2 kits either way.

of course. my point was that in this instance the mugen kit isnt dramatically more expensive than the other options.

I think with Nath having a full mugen bodykit, it makes more sense to take the mugen SC kit over other brands as this was available as a factory fitted option from new whereas other SC kits are aftermarket.

I remember Nath telling me that the mugen superchargers were only available on a new car and when they didnt all sell, they were passed over to TDI to sell as an add on to existing cars.

That would be correct!

And yes for the purpose of keeping it all the same "theme" the mugen kit makes the most sense.

What else would you have to do to your car to enable it to handle 200BHP (or more likely 250BHP once you've started). Might it feel like a different car that you might perhaps not enjoy? i.e. do you love the balance now, but just think it could do with a little more go?

I've just looked up some articles on supercharged CRZ's and I can seriously see the appeal, but it does concern me that it might become a bottomless pit. This is not a problem if you a) love the car and b) have the funds, and can stomach getting virtually nothing back when you eventually sell it.

Although, saying that, the rarity would be something priceless.

First port of call would be brakes, which share the same calipers with the S2000 so a 300mm disc can be fitted straight to them which is a great improvement over the stock 262mm ones. Infact I have been looking at Type R FN2 brakes which are straight bolt on.

The car already has Eibach Lowering springs which have tightened things up. The car has lighter alloy alloy wheels than stock with AD08 tyres on, so mechanical grip is immense.

A rear anti roll abr would give more adjusatbility on turn in and dial out some understeer.

An LSD isn't essential at this power output but power under cornering would be massively improved with one.

The pre-'charged CRZs out of the factory do not have LSDs so this isnt a massive concern.

A new exahust system would be purchased to add to the looks/sound and aid performance of the car.

Fair points there, although that would cost an awful lot.

Would be a cool project to see completed :D

I hope if you do go down this route that you let Will @ RDT do the mapping. He really is a wizard in mapping Honda (and other) engines from the people I've spoken to! Truly epic maps and not some bodge to hit max power, plus an incredible understanding about the whole car as a system.

Oh and a few technical Degrees to boot ;)

The installation and mapping would be done at TDi north as they are 3 minutes around the corner from where I work and have got a good repution.

I would definately consider this other guy though.

lemonade and gibbo have it spot on.

I've just had a quote from TDi North for £5300 inc VAT for the kit, fitting, Hondata and mapping. So £400 cheaper than taking it to TDi South.

Still going to test drive other cars etc.

I do like that celica tbh. Although a Celica is just not quite a supra.... :p Which is the only FI toyota I would entertain, bar a SC GT86 but that is £££££££

A, it will be the only car in that colour in the car park. B probably have the biggest active wing, C hideously overblown side skirts.

Dunno mate

Come on you're not even trying that's barely a rear spoiler. No side skirts. Looks like a hatch back woth a high centre of gravity. Only thing it has extra is the rear diffuser. You can get a copied TRD rear diffuser for the celica for 80 quid off ebay.

bro that has mugen skirts, the picture isn't the best angle. How about this.

they look part of the bodywork. Epic fail. The only reason the spoiler is so high is because the boot is 6 feet in the air. And looks hideous.

I'll take a picture of the CRZ next to some other parked cars so you an get a sense of scale.

You seem to be going off on one at me and I have not once said anything against your car.

Also some dimensions for comparison.

Celica Gen 7:
Wheelbase: 2,600 mm (102.4 in)
Length: 4,335 mm (170.7 in)
Width: 1,735 mm (68.3 in)
Height: 1,310 mm (51.4 in)

Honda CRZ:
Wheelbase: 2,435 mm (95.9 in)
Length: 4,080 mm (160.6 in)
Width: 1,740 mm (68.5 in)
Height: 1,395 mm (54.9 in)

Both versions as standard so no wings/kit etc.

CRZ is wider with a shorter wheel base and only a slighter taller.

I think I am pretty certain that it's going to happen.

I just want more info for TDi North and Mugen now really. And I want to track down one that is already SC'ed to see what they are actually like to drive.

Interesting that Mugen iCF mention internals though. Would yours be the first converted one?

The CRZ RZ looks good in Japan. Wonder if they can be imported :P

The RZ defiantely can, I have seen them at jap auctions. JMimports do a lot of those.

However the cost would be insane, as they are limited edition and then there's the whole import process and insurance afterwards.

No there are a few Mugen Katana CRZs around. Phoenix honda had a Sport spec 2011 in black with full mugen kit, wheels and SC not long ago and was up for 22K with only 2000 miles, quoting 200BHP.

The Mugen iCF (the orange one) is alittle more extreme with more of a race car feel to it with lightened doors, roof, bonnet and racing seats etc. Seems that more effort has been put into making it more track focussed despite what they say in their PR. As most video reviews for car reviewers have said this.

Ultimately 200BHP in my CRZ would be fantastic. Would have a genuine hot hatch feel (good power with light weight) without becoming a "new age" hot hatch where you have to be at 300BHP and 1500KG to be a player.

I may change the wheels at some point from Rotas to Enkies or OZ, basically something more premium and go for 17"s to accomodate the extra power.

Looks like the engine won't take the power of a supercharger thought. If you read between the lines of the Mugen version.

It will though, as the Supercharger kit I am getting is not identical to the iCF Mugen concept as that was bespoke.

Add to that owners have had cars from honda and mugen running 200bhp with this very kit.

S2000 is hardly expensive to run or unreliable.

It's also a two sweater. It's not like CRZ is practical.

Yeah but the s2000 is tiny inside and not comfortable for long journeys. You can't even adjust the steering wheels so it literally sits on top of my knees

Get a lexus gs430h. Hybrid, 300+ hp, 0-60 in 5 seconds, 55mpg. Ultra comfortable. Mark Levinson hifi. Win

test drove the new shape GS450 last year, great car obviously way outta my price league. Didn't quick was very refined, handled like a boat and CVT was annoying.

real world economy on the big engined Lexus Hybrids is renowned for being poor too. I found the GS250 much more fun to drive.
