Customers PC marked their carpet who's liable?

I already did the pc / screen at cost to help him out as he is poor / had a stroke plus I have done probably 5 free visits over the years to help him with various computer issues!
In that case, if they still push for a new carpet I'd block and ignore them. They're clearly ungrateful for all the help that you've given to them for free and they're trying it on for a new carpet now.

Why? It's the customer's PC, the customer asked for it to be moved. How is the OP responsible for that?

they aren’t. I’m not saying the op is responsible. as i said that was what i would he saying.

Its better to try to come to an amicable solution than losing a paying customer and facing negative reviews and going through official channels IMO

in which case i would be saying to them something along the lines below.

“im really sorry your carpet has been marked and i can understand where you are coming from however i believe asking for a full carpet replacement in this case is unfair owing to the age and condition of the carpet and the fact that i moved the pc at your own request. As you are aware i have tried to clean it myself and couldn’t. What i can do is offer you £xx off the pc OR request a professional cleaning service for the portion of affected carpet at my cost. However i won’t be replacing the full carpet or having the entire carpet professionally cleaned as that is not a proportionate or reasonable response to the incident.”

the £xx i would suggest being less than the cost of a cleaner as they are more likely to want cash than a clean carpet. And try to ensure that it doesn’t cut all of your profit away.

Don't do this.

Writing this you've as good as admitted fault.

Still OP, you didn't say in reply to my last question, how long has the PC been sat on the carpet?

A paying customer? By the sounds of it the OP has spent way more time dealing with this customer than it's actually worth. Besides, a 15 year old computer? This is a one and done customer.

Do you have public liability insurance? Just incase. I mean if it's their hardware initially it's their problem. You didn't provide the chassis, it's not your fault. You've done the best you can, they can't chase you.

What would you do? Who is legally and morally at fault?

I think legally you’re probably at fault, because you were doing the work.

Basically the “damage” has been caused by you, even if they asked you to move it.

However I’d say you’re probably only liable for the cost of cleaning it, I can’t see him getting a replacement carpet for that in a million years :D

I also can’t in a million years see him taking you to court over it.

If it was me, I’d probably stonewall him - the cost of taking someone to court over that would eclipse the cost of the cleaning it.

To the OP - Some customers/ people try to screw as much out of you as they possibly can. No matter what you do, you won’t win this. Ignore the customer in question and move on.
