Dark Souls gameplay discussion - spoilers ahoy!

If you go Human form, you can normally summon NPC players to help fight with you on the bosses right before you enter the white mist.

Yup, for the butterfly boss the NPC sign is hidden under a bush under the stairs you run up to fight her! Hack the bush, summon, easy peasy fight

are most of you fellas getting through the bosses with help from others? I am struggling stuck between gargoyles/butterfly/capra demon but have no live sub atm.

Gargoyles are pathetically easy as long as you have a 100% physical resist shield, which as a Knight you do. Just block their melee, attack when you can and back off when you run out of stamina and watch out for their fire breath.

If you are having trouble, make sure you speak to Solaire at the end of the bridge with the dragon on it, also free Lautrec from his cell in the Parish chapel (he's around the corner from the mage enemy if you haven't already), then head back to Firelink and speak to Lautrec, after that get into Human form and you can summon them both for Gargoyle fight, makes it disgustingly easy.

There are a number of times NPC phantoms can be summoned for nearly every boss, you don't need to be online for this.

Also why aren't you wearing armor?

Thanks i will try that, i killed the bloke at the end of the dragon bridge after he gave me the soapstone thingy cos i figured he was live based oops maybe a mistake.

Oh and armour seems to make me really slow and cumbersome, whats the point of reducing damage when i get hit twice as often as i cant get away!? it just doesnt suit me im probs wrong char, i have started wearing light leathers though

The gargoyle (1st) just hammered me i never got near him to attack, im pretty nifty with the shield too have no probs with the big stone knights etc and other slow enemies. Just killed the butterfly but had my butt handed to me by some dude in a tower with a massive sword, easy to dodge but one hit and im all but gone.

Loving this tho, hard to stop playing just a little torn now with what to do i guess keep cracking at the gargoyles and then take on the capra?

Had a good session today. Beat the Gargoyles on my 2nd attempt, took the Titanate Demon on my 1st go, also beat the Moonlight Butterfly 1st try as well. Got the Elite Knight Armour and decided to go back and have another go at Havel. Took me a few goes but took him and got his ring, which I really wanted so I could keep most of the Elite Armour on and still be mobile. Now trying to decide where to go next, any suggestions?

I am currently wearing knights armour, where can I get some lighter stuff to maybe mix and match? Also where is Havel? Not encountered him yet

is havel the dude with the huge sword in the tower which you get the key for after killing the butterfly? if so he is a pain but should be beatable with caution. Have beaten gargoyles now, start fresh tomorrow i think try and progress to a new area,

Havel is the guy at the bottom of the tower, big stone/metallic looking guy with a massive blunt weapon. If you beat him he drops a ring that increases your max load and you can go through the door to an area with big cystal looking guys and a Hydra boss in the water.

It's the tower where at the top has the Taurus boss, he's right at the bottom through the locked door when you enter before you head up to Taurus.

I seeee, might have a crack at him.

My friend told me something interesting. The guy in undead parish locked up that you free, wearing golden armour, when you free him he appears at firelink shrine. If you kill him he drops a ring that gives 20% to like 5 stats or something? And if you leave him he kills the woman under firelink shrine that upgrades your estus flask? This true or bull?

From what I've read that's true: what I don't get is that I've upgraded my estus flask without need for an npc? Is that right? Gonna have some shots at Brock tomorrow tough bugger I ent in through darkroot basin what's the boss like down there? The one past. Crystal guys?

SPOILER - So only read if you want to

From Dark Souls Wiki;

Anastacia Of Astora

Located down the stairs from the bonfire, inside a cell built in the cliff face. Can upgrade Estus Flasks using Firekeeper's Soul. Lautrec will kill her when you enter Blighttown, but you can hunt him down in Anor Londo and retrieve her soul to resurrect her.

You upgrade it by getting that heart of the sun god or some shizzle, then going to the woman under firestone shrine, how did you do it?

Estus flask is upgraded with Fire Keepers Souls, by taking them to a living Firekeeper, to my knowledge there are two, one is under Firelink, the other is in Anor Londo.

Next bit is spoiler heavy so only read on if you want more info on Lautrec.

In terms of Lautrec, when you enter the Depths he leaves Firelink, once you complete Blightown and ring the bell, you will find the Firelink fire keeper dead, you will get a Black Eye Stone from her corpse and the Firelink bonfire will not work. When you later get to Anor Londo, in the room before the boss you will get a message telling you the stone is reacting, using it acts like using a Red Eye Orb top invade another player, except you are taken into Laurtrecs world and you have to kill him. He has two companions and it is not an easy fight, at least as melee, once you kill him you get the ring mentioned above, boosts stats but you cant take it off without breaking it, a humanity and the Firelink keepers soul, it's the same as any other Fire Keepers soul and you "could" use it at the Anor Londo firekeeper to upgrade the flask, however instead you can and should take it back to Firelink and give it back to the Firelink keeper to revive her, letting you use the bonfire again, if you don't the Firelink bonfire will remain out for the playthrough.

Also, I would advise against killing him early, you get his ring but what you don't get is his Armor, which if you kill him in Anor Londo you get after defeating the bosses from a corpse above them.

As above, spoilerific.

There are two bosses in Basin, the Hydra and Great Gray Wolf Sif, Hydra is technically a miniboss and can be cheesed at range with a bow if you have patience and a lot of arrows, check wiki or youtube for how, otherwise it's not incredibly hard but he's not a push over either. Sif on the other hand is a full on Boss and is bloody difficult, it's the one boss so far that gave me allot of trouble. To get to Sif you either have to kill the hydra and climb the waterfall or buy the Crest of Artorias from the Blacksmith and open the door in Darkroot Garden, then get past the 5-6 NPC enemies, some of which you can't target and all of which can do things like backstab, parry and riposte, there is a technique to farm them by making them leap (literally) off a cliff (again find this yourself) making this the easier way to get to Sif.

However, there is one massive problem, if you are playing online, DO NOT PASS THE DOOR IN BODY FORM.

The forest covenant means that anyone not in it who passes that door counts as an invader into their domain, at which point Covenant members will be summoed to your world to kill you, there does not appear to be a limit to how many can be summoned at any one time or a limit to the soul level of the person being summoned, so chances are you will get destroyed.

Another word of warning for those heading to Sif, on your way you may notice a small tower like structure, in this tower there is an NPC, it's a Cheshire Cat wannabe called Alvina, she leads the Forest Covenant and unless you want to join them (not a bad idea actually, though check wiki for details) don't talk to her, as after doing so myself and saying no, she won't give me the option to join again, the blocks you from a few very nice items.

I had an item in my inventory, said it upgraded estus flask, clicked use it asked 'upgrade estus flask yes/no' that's why I was so confused when I heard about fire keepers....

That's odd, which platform are you playing on? Also where did you get the soul?

When used from the inventory Fire Keepers Souls just give you some humanity, you have to take it to a Fire Keeper to upgrade the flask. This is certainly the case on the PS3.

For spoilery hydra stuff

If you're wondering about having a go at the Hydra I'd say as a fighter its probably the easiest boss fight Ive faced. Once you lured out and killed the crystal demons rush in super fast (Its range attack is deadly but the only worry) to the waters edge but dont go more than a few metres in. Once there simply block and whack the heads off when it attacks. Once you get a couple lopped off you could literally go afk since heads always land in same place!

Had a go at Tomb of the Giants today....ouch! Think I might need to head elsewhere for now. Need the lords souls and not sure which area to hit up so may be trial and error.

Am I missing something?

I am at the bonfire near the Rat boss in the depths, I have cleared the place and opened up the shortcut with those steps as you walk into the same room where the rat used to be.

Other than that shortcut, the only other way is to progress past the merchant, down those steps and kill those things. Which I managed last time, but ended up losing 34k+ souls! So want to back track and do some grinding, am I right in thinking I have to walk all the way back through the depths, lower undead burg then finally back to the original bonfire?

Which is a long way!

Have I missed any shortcuts on my travels?
