Dark Soul's: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)

About to actually pick this game up and try for the first time... What is a good noob friendly class and what stat points do I want to pump?

Just quit now. It's a stupid game :(

Pyromancer is good for starting as the flame throw is handy for a few mini bosses early on.

The thing with this game is that the starting class doesn't matter a whole lot, as you can spec into almost any build from any starting class. The starting class just dictates initial stat distribution, what gear you get to start with, and which spells (if you pick a caster)... all of which case be picked up during the game anyway.

Pyromancer is a good one to start with, as having some spells from the get go can make things slightly easier. Whatever you do just don't start with the depraved class :P Also picking the Master Key as your starting gift can unlock a few shortcuts early on (though this isn't that big a deal on your first playthrough).

As for points, it depends on what sort of build you want to go for. The basic builds are normally Faith (miracles) or Intelligence (magic/pyromancy) combined with either Dexterity (light-med armour, curved swords, daggers etc) or Strength (big swords, clubs and such, heavier armour) in different ratios. All classes need Vitality and Endurance, so be sure to pump some points into those every now and then regardless :) Have fun!

If you are totally new to the series pick Warrior.

Pyromancer is great once you've got the mechanics down (its the best starting class, basically) and know where to get some decent equipment. Warrior however is literally idiot proof as you start with a great weapon/armour set which allows you to easily get used to combat. Just put your points into Vit/Stam and a bit of Str, you start with enough Dex to use a basic Bow as well which is helpful as you can buy one early on.

I always start Pyro but before I even set foot in the first area I've got a 100% phys resist shield, better weapon, +1 Upgraded Estus Flask and about 10K worth of soul consumables. You can actually get a better armour set and another Estus upgrade but it requires delving a bit deeper into Blighttown than I feel is worth it.

**** O&S.

I simply can't kill them... I'm out of humanity. The few fights I've been summoned too I've died in.

I think This might be the point where I leave the game here and wait for DS2.

I just can't kill them solo. By the time I've killed the skinny bitch I have a couple or no pots left. And his lightning fast crap just wipes me out.

Try another area? Have you opened that door in the woods for easy soul farming? (20,000 needed to by the Broken Pendant off the blacksmith)
Come back stronger.

A fire weapon or Quelaag's Furysword is great for the skinny dude, the lightning spear for the fat one. (kill the skinny guy first)

Yea, I have that area unlocked. Could do a bit of farming. I'm just sick of this boss. I've unlocked the shortcut near the blacksmith.

I went through the game this time with a magic build, still had Solaire left at the end of the fight, was much easier.

Have you done the catacombs yet?

What weapon do you have agnes? O&S really are a pain in the ***** and this is coming from someone on NG+2. Here's some advice from Podmonkey earlier and its pretty much what i do..

O&S are another pair that seem ridiculous on the first few meetings but have their easymodes too. Get Solair to distract the fatty, dodge and stab the midget then when its just the fatty left, just keep a pillar between the 2 of you, he wont get passed it as long as you are quick enough (under 50% load should do) and just keep waiting till he does his vertical smashes as theres a nice little recovery time, 2h stab and back behind the pillar. any AoE he does gives you time to just roll away from the pillar and all other moves you will be safely out of reach. slow and cowardly but very effective.

Nope, not done the catacombs.

Here are my current stats:

I have only got the chest to +2... And the shield is a grass crescent shield to boost stam regen.

Looking at those, do you think I should be easily fighting O&S with a +10 Uchigatana?

There was an Occult club in a mimic chest in Anor Londo, you can downgrade that to a Divine club and kill the skellys with it in the Catacombs.

The fire blacksmith is there, and also The great scythe, awesome dex weapon.

I hate the idea of having to be so close to fatty using that sword, on my dex build im using both the great scythe +10 fire and the gargoyle halberd. Even with that bit of distance i still find him tough but i can chip and roll at him.

So tonight, I will get some time to play this. Do you think it's worth me backtracking to the forest and farming souls for the evening? Maybe try and get my dex up to 30 at least?

Good idea, also if you can stand to learn the path and die a bunch of times, go to the catacombs. There is a chamber just before the Nito boss that has little skeleton babies that respawn endlessly, i hacked away at them for an hour, made 400k souls and 50 humanity! Vid on YT called '300k souls in 15 mins'.

Hmmmm, sounds better than going to the forest... Maybe I could do that and get my dex and vit to 40, then go from there?

Thats the cool thing about this game, there is no right or wrong way, do what you need to get souls :) Im doing a pyro/dex build at the moment alongside my pure dex, just got to anor londo with a +10 Uchigatana, that thing is shredding stuff up!

What stats have you got and what SL?

And I do indeed like the weapon :) I'm wearing it with the shadow set, sort of role playing a ninja character.

Tried to screen shot but its not having it for some reason. Vit21, End23, Str14, Dex27, everything else ive left(except Attunement at 14) SL46.

So we are practically the same then. Hmmmm, I agree about the Uchigatana tearing things up, it kills most mobs in a couple of backstabs.

You 2H or 1H with shield? I mix it up, shield then 2H. Let me know if you do O&S alone or not :)

I only tend to shield against mobs thats have long range attacks, everything else i two hand but always stay light enough to roll fast to get the hell out of there if i need to. As for O&S, i always summon Solaire, he keeps fatty occupied while i smash skinny, its just a question of how fast you kill him so Solaire has a decent amount of health left to join you in taking on super fatty.
