Dashcams!

Records an hour?

So what if you're on a 2 hour journey and you need to access footage from the start of the journey?

I don't get it, why would you need or want to look at the footage from a normal journey?

It automatically locks files in the event of a crash and you can hit a button on the screen to lock a file if you just like you can on a basic dash cam but that's it and really all you need unless you want to spend time uploading clips of of 'epic crash' video's to YouTube.

It's not a full featured £200 dash cam, its just a basic dash cam built into the car which was cobbled together really quickly as a request from their customers on twitter, its likely to improve over time. At the end of the day it is software that can be changed and added to at a later date.

Not sure why yours and even most Tesla owners expectations are so high, it's was not ever intended functionality of the car nor was it ever promised on the spec sheet but they were able to add it as a new feature added to cars built after Aug 2017 for free. How many other cars get new features 15 months after they were released for free?

In case you're witness to another accident, so you can pull the footage later and share it with someone.
If you have a minor incident and you're on a long journey then you can finish your journey and pull the footage later.
If you witness something strange/interesting/share worthy, then you can finish your journey and pull the footage later.

The length of time shouldn't be a factor if you can pop in an SD card and just constantly fill and override it.

Teslas are one of the most technologically advanced cars on the road, which is why something as simple as a dashcam feels like a glaringly obvious omission from the vehicle as something that should be built in. Especially when many of the Tesla's (pre-model 3) cost $70k-$100k plus. Dashams aren't fancy or new tech anymore.

Dashcams are still on the steep part of the S-curve. I always keep a spare SD card in my car so that if I'm in or witness an accident I can change it to be sure it isn't overwritten.

Actually, I'd like a dashcam that records to two SD cards simultaneously so I can give one to the police officer on the scene.

You missed the part of my post which says you can press a button to lock files if you want to so really the hour recording loop isn't such a huge issue. You can also swap the USB stick easily if you are worried about losing footage.

Sure it could be better and there are other issues with it (its functionality is very basic) but no other car comes with a dash cam so I'm not really sure why you told Tesla to a much higher standard than anyone else, specially as its something they have added to the car after it was built and is not intended functionality of the autopilot system. Any dashcam is better than no dashcam.

Ahh yeah, you're right. That does make it better.

Because it's Tesla. They're a technology company as much as an automotive company and pioneered using multiple cameras/vision systems for their autopilot. So yeah, I kind of expect them more than anyone to be ahead of the game with having a high quality integrated dashcam system.

It just seems odd considering all the other incredible tech packed into them, that's all.

My car has been hit twice and vandalised twice in the last 11 months and I have had enough so I have just pre-ordered the Junsun A920 Android Front Rear camera package (hardwired will constantly monitor the car and send me notifications to my phone so I can watch what is happening there) and added a 20gb Sim only deal through BT for £15pm.

Sure there are way better dashcams but this gives me the chance of actually catching some of the toe rags that damage my car.

Not sure why people spend so much on dash cams tbh

I’ve had a LUKAS cam in my car since I got it new in 2013 and it cost me around £100 which seemed steep to me at the time but it was by no means anywhere near the Blackvue models for price.

In fact, when I did a comparison it was like for like on specs in a smaller body and no distracting external screen to blind the driver on a night, so I took a punt.

It continues to record at a decent bitrate, 1080p 60fps and has all of the accelerometer jazz if you want that sort of stuff. Twice it’s captured something worth saving (once when I took my daughter to my ex and it caught her partner being violent toward me, and the second when the airport parking guys triggered the motion alert by hitting a slope a bit too quickly).

I picked it up off eBay and it’s seen -15c and +35c without missing a beat. It’s still on the original 64GB SD card and has been great value for the length of service. I’d advise anyone to consider going for a Korean or Chinese cam, as there are loads of bargains to be had.

Hi, can someone recommend me a Dash Cam please. Never thought i would want one...

Anyways i dont want to spend too much. Around £50. Can't see myself spending more then that.
I have browsed on Amazon and few other sites but dont know what to get.

Are you wanting front only or front and rear?

.

My dashcam has a screen yet it doesn't distract or blind me whilst driving, day or night.

It turns on, shows it's recording then turns the screen off, all within 10 secs of starting the car. Even when I hit save the screen remains off.

That may well be the case with yours, but all the drivers I see with dashcams have a visibly active screen.

I drive or ride behind them and I can see the footage they're capturing. Day or night.

My Xiaomi Yi Dashcam arrived today. Was less than £40, so will be interested to see how it performs.

How are you finding this, any sample video?

I've got YI camera in the house as a baby monitor at the moment. Really impressed with it for £20 and the app is pretty user friendly too.

There is. It allows roadside playback in the event it's required, which it has been previously.

But I can do that without a screen... Most dashcams have apps these days tbh.

There is, unfortunately I can't show you. It's complicated.

It's not my main dashcam. I think it's on the MM somewhere in fact if you're interested.
