Dashcams!

Just watched my weekly dose of top rated vids from the last 7 days at www.reddit.com/r/roadcam

The footage is definitely getting better now that so many more people are getting dashcams

Once of the best, this hero spots a hit and run in the far right lane on the exit ramp, catches up with the driver, gets the plate and calls the cops

Should get some of these stuck on the windows, would be interesting to see if people reacted differently after seeing them

Yeah, I'd cut them up on purpose so I could watch myself on some youtube compilation uploaded by a sad little man with nothing better to do. Like that angrydashcamman fool.

I agree. I was half joking, would never do it myself, the more discreet the better in general. It also depends where you take your car. Might have its uses on commercial vehicles though I suppose. Or for professional drivers.

Sods law Mrs Tosno didn't put the memory card in the dash cam today, she was practicing driving and a tescos delivery van tried to overtake her but timed it wrong and was going to crash into on coming traffic and rams into the side of her Yaris, wing mirror area, the force of which makes her crash into the side of the railings. Luckily she only has a bit of shock and seems the Yaris is built like a tank, only some scratches and a lost hub cap, tescos van came off worse.

A company on tescos behalf phoned up saying if we deal with them, it wont effect our no claims bonus? It sounded dodgy and I told them to call back. We contacted our insurance instead, was it the right move?

Christ this thread has progressed, haven't had a decent chunk of time to even consider purchasing a dashcam. Main consideration at the time was the Thinkware F750, awesome features but video samples proved to be a bit disappointing for the price.

I'm sure there's some great information in this thread so I'm certainly going to have a good read. Thanks all :)

Not sure whats proved to be disappointing with the F750 bud? - for the price its the best dashcam on the market as most sites review it highly for its picture quality, pegging it amongst the best.....

Had mine for about 2 weeks in the car - love it, no messing, setup through WIFI on my android phone and been running spot on since. Exactly what I wanted, something once setup I don't need to mess with. Speed camera alerts are spot on.

Parking surveillance mode is great, can be set to motion detection or event detection. Battery drain has never been a problem (sometimes my car doesn't get started for a couple of days whilst I'm away).

Those of you that have dashcams, do you leave them in the car all the time? If so, are you not worried about your car being broken into to steal it? The reason I ask, is a friend of mine has one and it records if the car is bumped or so on even if he's not in the car and I was surprised he left it in there, but I guess that's one of the benefits/features of them.

Mine never leaves the car. It's not a high value item, which thieves are looking for. It doesn't benefit them to chance breaking a car window to nab a camera that won't net them much profit.

That and it's mounted neatly away and isn't obvious, being all black with the lens covered by the CPL filter, which is also black :p

Yep. You can't see it from the outside though unless you crouch down to look through the window and peer right up to where the centre mirror is.

If someone wants to break in and steal something that's worth maybe £30 second-hand on eBay then there's not much I can do I guess. They might as well nick the 128GB USB stick in the glove box, badminton racket in the boot, spare wheel...

:p

:p

It's a fair comment I guess sometimes thieves just don't care and will nick anything - I've had £3.07 stolen from my mx5 before - that's all they took. They didn't even take the usb charger, or usb stick or other items available.

I'm toying with the idea of getting one after seeing my friend's one. Also after a few close calls over the last year or so I guess if the worst were to happen I'd have a bit of extra evidence to give to the authorities. Since you can get a 3rd gen mini 806 for under £60 it seems like it might be worth a go.

I've just picked up an 0806 with CPL filter and hardwire kit from eBay for my new car. Wanted something small and discrete without any other gizmos on it so this fit the bill.
