Dat beard

With all these beard pics I may as well post mine! Need to tidy it up big time!!

And into the manly thread of manliness I go...

I've had a lazyness beard for years but decided I need to keep it tidier. I usually let it grow for a couple of weeks and then trim it down to a 3 and start again.

I'm tidying up the neck line slowly (got to make sure I keep those extra chins covered) but my main problem is that when it grows it grows quite tough and pointy, and in random directions, so my face looks and feels like a well overused toothbrush.

What's a good product to soften it up and help it look more presentable? Googling balms or oils opens up a whole world of confusion. I'm not planning on going long, Im after something around Josh86s lenght, but softer and more uniform than my current fuzz.

I've gone for this suggestion:
This is the set my other half got me for Xmas. Soap, balm, 'stache wax and a comb. Smells nice, and feels nice after giving my beard some love :D

At just over £22 it seems worth a punt, plus teh_captain has an epic beard and uses it, so it must be good, right? More seriously, it seems like a cheap try / step into the world of beard care with moisturiser stuff (softness) and some wax (shaping) so I'm hoping it'll at least show what products can do and then I can buy more expensive stuff if I feel the need. There were a few other good suggestions (although a bit pricer) when I asked earlier too.

Anyone tried this? From the limited number of reviews I've found, they're unanimously positive.

I used Kalamazoo a beard wash from Lush, Woman normally comment on how my beard is the softest and nicest feeling they have ever touched ;) I've been growing this beard thing I have for nearly 18 months and it's pathetic, it just grows at my chin, I think at the longest it was 4" but the bit in the middle didn't grow so I trimmed it and now it's much smaller :(

I'm envious of your beard!

This guy has. :p

Jojoba oil and a brush work for me. Mines relatively new (just under a month), but it's working wonders. I have extremely dry skin all over my face, so I thought growing a beard would be hell, but I have a little routine I follow to keep beardruff away and keep the hair soft:

  • Use dry boar hair brush on dry beard to rub skin beneath it which loosens any dead skin cells and dirt (Apparently helps promote hair growth too).
  • Flannel wash beard and face with hot water
  • Towel dry
  • Put about 10 drops of jojoba oil on hands and massage it into skin under beard and then through beard/over face
  • Give it one last brush with boar hair brush to make it look neat

I just let the oil soak in, you can rinse next morning if needed, but for me I don't bother, the oil doesn't make my face greasy, but makes the hair feel nice and soft. I don't shampoo it in the shower or do anything else except put Jojoba oil in it. Any oil will work though I believe, just get whatever you like the smell of. I haven't tried any balms or anything else yet.

My girlfriend works in Lush so gets me Kalamazoo whenever I need it. It's good stuff for conditioning and smells good too. Doesn't lather up really, more of a cream sort of thing, but does work a treat.

Some nice beards here gents, looks like Kalamazoo is the one to try! Will pick it up on the weekend along with some other things and report back :)

Enjoy:

my mates got beards its like some new fad trend, its so camp i dont get it all this beard wax/oil and daily trimming and combing. what has this world come to....

Also ages them by 10 years and from what im told girls dont like them.

HAz I assume you don't wash/comb your hair then? I suspect I spend less time a day on my beard than you do obsessively scraping your face of every little hair.
As for a new 'fad trend' I have had a beard for 30 years...
;)

It is the fad right now tbh, I've always wanted to grow one so I finally took the plunge.

Beard oil is to make it so you don't get dry skin underneath the hair, same with balm. Combing / brushing to make it look neat and get rid of dead skin cells and dirt.

No difference really to shaving with the amount of time spent per day, but girls liking them is subjective, some women prefer their men to look feminine, so like guys who shave and go totally hairless, some prefer their men to look like men, so like beards.

Never used anything like it before and it turned up today, has a really nice manly smell to it. I just need to find a decent brush now.
