***Dayz: Stand Alone Thread***

How come Davey, I have no real hatred for you unless you are Rocket in disguise?

I like how dayz takes seconds to log in now but the bad points outweigh the good points so far.

Just my humble opinion

Davey the warning seems a little vague... It has me worried whether or not I can risk continuing to post in this thread... Re-reading my own posts I can see that they are fairly argumentative but anything that could be construed as an insult/dig/attack is (I think) fairly clearly directed at Rocket and his team of developers as opposed to any particular members of the forum...

If you're having a go at the developer then it's fine. It's attacks/digs/insults towards fellow members that won't be tolerated.

Ok so I've read back a couple of pages and i have absolutely no idea what any of you are saying.

I would like to get into this game, but i have no idea where to begin. Any tips?

oh and bind turbo x4 run speed to a key (obviously uses more water/food running than 2x would)

I used a couple of guides from the steam community page for DayZ to help me get started.

The quicker you move inland the better as a lot of coastal towns will have pvp action

How do you play online? Is it lobby based or specific servers?

specific servers but your character does not remain on a single server, so you can switch between servers without losing your gear unless you get the bug where your gear disappears like you died from switching servers.

the game is pretty buggy and basic right now the mod version for arma 2 has loads more stuff and there are other mods with zombies that allow you to build bases , they have npc trading villages where you can't be attacked by players etc

Is there any pattern to where different loot drops?
The only place I have found the sniper rifle so far is in the cold, dead hands of other would-be 'survivors'
I never seem to find magnum ammo either.

M4's seem to be 2 -a- penny though,

click one of the dots/icons on the map.
look at the bottom right and it says what the building level is and what could possibly spawn there.

You have got electo fire stations. Cherno fire stations aswel as the school and the hospitals. Then you have balota airfield, barracks and army tents. If you go up north, you have got thr northen airfield, then you got the midlands military base. All north from balota :)

Do you think there are plans for the standalone to ever have its own new map/s? I have to admit this was one of the things I was expecting out of a standalone (eventually)... Chernarus and the others are fine I guess but I could imagine much more awesome things...

Like for example imagine if you had a big sprawling map with open plains and forests and what-not around the edge, but then have some giant cities with huge buildings (perhaps not quite New York/Manhattan scale, but you know a few big buildings in the middle and some fairly large ones around them)... Have it quite run down so there can be excuses for things like partially broken building sections creating "bridges" from one skyscraper to another. Would introduce some really interesting vertical gameplay - and especially if you created good incentives for the high buildings to be worth the effort of controlling would make for some intense situations...

Of course I still think the stability of the game's core should still be the main thing that needs sorting out at the moment... I guess I was just a little surprised that it's just the same maps (although I don't know - perhaps a lot of players are much more fond of those maps than I)

I think the long term plan has always been to use Chernarus and modify that, ala Chernarus Plus, as it's what the community is used to.

Personally I think they do need a brand new map by the time it gets to release, or the option of several maps! Even if they put it up to the community to create the maps, I'm sure they could come up with something much better than Chernarus! Admittedly ArmA mapmaking isn't the easiest in the world compared to other games / engines, but it's still fairly logical and straight-forward.

Taviana would be my choice or ideally when you get a certain distance on the infinite edge of a map you can load in to another map but doubt that will ever happen

Well, basically the current standard for the Standalone is: if you see someone with a weapon they WILL attack you, even if you tell them you are friendly and have no weapon yourself and your gear consists of a tin of beans and some gaffa tape.

People are so boring.

Would be easier if you had to see a "Smuggler" to get to a new area i.e map!

I thought you'd given up on this thread? :p

Though that does raise some good ideas! Such as if it was based on an island, and a smuggler was able to take you to another new island (different map), or be able to build your own raft to do the same.

It doesn't seem surprising that people just kill each other on sight most of the time because really that's all the game has...

Okay you might say, you can instead team up with some people if you can find anyone friendly... Great! And what do you do with that group of people? Travel around the map looking for other people... to... kill... on sight... oh :p

Realistically I think the best thing they could do would be to work on it so that the zombies are really quite seriously formidable opponents... As in if you meet a group of them on your own you are in big trouble, and cannot get away from them without some pretty serious efforts... The idea being that the zombies are deadly enough that the only realistic chance of surviving for any length of time would be to try and find other survivors and team up. So a random unarmed guy with a tin of beans and an axe is going to be more use to you alive...

There are elements of this in the mod but I don't feel its enough... You can pretty easily just run away from even the largest groups of zombies and it's just not too difficult to survive on your own...

Its why I prefer playing Wasteland. All you do in DayZ atm is try to find guns and kill people. I'd rather just play Wasteland and skip the two hours of running around finding stuff part.
