***Dayz: Stand Alone Thread***

see I'm on the fence about that, SIR:YABH has just released and is good, that was a £12 for me and worth it, so was prison architect, £10 and love it unfinished.

Oh hang on, both of those have had content-full monthly updates.

DAYZ could still pull this out of the bag IMO, but people need to see something happening in the next couple of months! six months with nothing really new is shocking to me

(listing relatively minor bug fixes isnt enough, not for 6 months work so please dont bother with a petty argument, the actual game has not really changed!)

Agree with Boycey... Alpha itself is no bad thing and in fact a great many games are going to be better end-products because of it, and it would be a shame to let a few bad experiences ruin that...

The problem isn't Early Access / Alpha Testing itself but the way the money and incentive is regulated. Valve are making a bit of an assumption that the developers who use Early Access to put their games out there are as good-willed and full of noble intentions as Valve are themselves. This just isn't the case though, of course it isn't (it's why we can't have nice things). For every hardworking developer who just wants to live the dream of making a game and seeing it through to build their reputation and get experience, make their game the best it can be (Prison Architect, Kerbal Space Program, Sir:YABH) there are many more who are in it for a cash grab or to mitigate risk. Likewise with Kickstarter

Pull what out of the bag? They have a development roadmap and they're doing it.

They've totally rewritten the multiplayer architecture already to move it from a trust-all system to a server privilege system, basically eradicating a lot of the scripting abuse that plagued the DayZ mod. They're moving from a UDP-based to TCP-based network architecture, again to make the user experience more consistent. They've fixed most of the awful inventory problems that the original mod had. They've fixed mouse acceleration (yaaaaaay). They've added more items and are working towards having a fully dynamic loot spawning system which rewards players for taking risks (going to high-pop areas) instead of just camping the airfield and server hopping. The basics of physics is in, you can throw gas lanterns off rooftops to illuminate areas effectively. They've added whole new towns to the map. I'm sure there's lots of other stuff I've missed, you can read the changelog Here

The game isn't going to be DayZ the mod, and never will be. It's already better because it's not stuffed full of kids dropping cows, tanks and helicopters on your head as soon as you log in. It's going to be a survival game which is what Rocket wanted and was aiming for in the first place.

Given all of that, in what way has the game been missold or misrepresented in it's current state?

Did you just say mouse is fixed? That is a great bug to squash if that is true. Lot's of people moan about the mods inventory system but I thought it was easy to use and worked well.

Mouse acceleration has been fixed on stable and experimental for a few weeks now, it feels like a normal FPS. I couldn't go back to the 'wading through treacle' system.

The mod inventory system had a habit of eating items because of some shuffling algorithm which is mostly fixed now in SA. There are still issues with certain items (sickles particularly) dropping out of your hand when you're running along and the 'shuffling bug' occuring at login. Just leave a 2x2 space in one of your inventories and it shouldn't happen.

Last week I lost three sawn-off shotguns in full backpacks on login (three logins rather than me carrying three and losing them all in one go!). I have now taken to leaving space in my backpack even though I have no actual evidence that that is what has prevented it from happening again (definition of superstition right there).

I came across a server yesterday that for some reason had an issue where dropping clothing that had items contained within would mean the clothing and items would just disappear into the floor. This has not happened to me in yonks, so I assume that was a server issue? I waited around three minutes to see if it was just lag (but perhaps it appeared a few minutes later, who knows).

Two days ago I also came across a bona fide hacker (a term that I used to laugh at as I assumed it was called out by people who just couldn't aim or use the controls properly). He had created a 100m 'safe zone' around him, which meant that any items in your hands (firearms for example) would be put back into your inventory/on your back; you could not deploy your weapon. This happened to all in a certain distance of him (he claimed it to be 100m). He then gave out morphine injectors! He seemed to be killing campers and helping those who were polite...

Yeah, things like to drop through the floor, sometimes you can get it back by running around with your inventory open and hope you find it...

A group of us were on a sortie and after the server restarted my friend logged back in naked and in the middle of a field - everyone else was fine. No idea what happened there. Logins / Logouts need a lot of work too, as does the server side of things generally. Apparently the average hive needs about 500IOPs, which basically means you need an SSD to host a server. That's no good.

there may be a list but don't be putting any money on them coming true
Based on what evidence? The fact they added throwing and physics at all seems bonkers to me, but there it is.

My first attempt at playing since the initial release was short-lived. I encountered two people being pursued by zombies. I announced my intentions, and proceeded to club said zombies with my trusty wrench in some vain hope that the players might refrain from killing me indiscriminately. One suggested I loot a nearby body for a .22 rifle which was of little use to him. Guess what happened next? ;)

Finally craved in after pressure from friends and after coulple of hours I'm not overly impressed. Managed to get some gear and the proceeded to get shot in the head by some friendly chap after trying to say hi

Any fixes to the engine/FPS yet?

Depends what you mean by 'fixes'!

With nigh all settings on high/very high and resolution at 200% (damn it's a good-looking game at that) I'm getting circa 50-60 in the countryside and 20-30 in places like Svetlojarsk and Berezino (using Overwolf with no idea of its accuracy).

I was in Berezino looking out of a house window and then towards the countryside repeatedly. I was reliably getting 37fps when looking out into the country, but looking out of the other side of the house into town it consistently dropped to around 25fps. Switching between them was pretty consistent in terms of FPS.

Tried putting a comment on the DayZtv.com website basically asking if they thought they were doing a good job then they should offer refunds and see how many take it....... obviously didn't get moderators approval as they know the answer.

Many people will like this game but anyone who played the mod for a good 18 months can't see the stand alone as progress surely?
