A few servers I have played on have had fully tooled up guys shooting noobs from the wood yard in Berezino.
That was only a couple of times out of many though

So I popped on a few days ago and performance has improved I think? Seemed to be running much smoother so I turned everything up really high and all was dandy.
Tried changing servers and it logged me in without any of my stuff in the middle of nowhere though, had loads of good gear too.

Is it possible you joined a different server type? Normal vs Hardcore.
Thirsk is pretty much designed for that kind of extreme PVP though.
Camping at the bridge and around that forest area is so awesome.

Not sure mate. I haven't been on for so long that I started the game and just clicked play which I assume loaded me into the last server I was in? Either way it was empty hence me leaving and the game going **** up.

You'll be able to tell if you're in hardcore or regular by whether you can switch to 3rd person view (regular). Also shows it on the server list.
If you were again in the same type of server, then logging back in can mean your stuff returns. It used to happen far more often to me, but now very occasionally, everything will go from my kit, including loaded rounds. Logging back in usually brings the stuff back.

I think it was softcore on both as pressing Enter goes into 3rd person view?

They were both regular then, which means you may be able to log back in and your gear will appear back on you, or it is lost permanently...
It's happened to me a few times and it is oh so very frustrating. I now tend to just laugh it off in exasperation and go punch a geared player unconscious; it's certainly not a game that encourages playing nicely with others.
Taking their time getting the current experimental build over to stable while on the other hand I am getting fed up with having to update breaking point seemingly every time I go to play it (and the time it takes to update)

Hang on, no I still don't get it.
SA is annoying you as it takes forever to release an update that breaks the game even more, but BP is also annoying you as it updates its Alpha to much and you have to download it.
The world is indeed a strange place full of strange people.
