Dell 13z thread

The top spec 15z is the same price as the top spec 13z. There doesn't seem to be any difference other than the screen is 15", the graphics are ATI Radeon 4330 and it uses a 6 cell battery with the option of 9. Worth plumping for the 15z?

Sorry but this laptop is cheap looking, really dislike it. I think I'd have to go with the XPS 13" or a Macbook. Damn it's been hit with a large ugly stick. Guess it's all personal preference though :D

You reckon the 13z looks cheap? :o

You're the first person to say that IRL and online :p

Sorry mrk, I'm sure it's a great laptop, but for me it looks a little cheap :( Sorry I do hope you love it though

I do, I want to marry it and everything man!:eek:

Jokes aside, I really don't think it looks cheap at all! If you lived closer I'd show you in person so you can see for yourself.

Also, I was playing with a silver MBP in a certain world a few days ago, loved the big trackpad but hated the lag it had, the Dell laptops have much better trackpads for lag free mousing.

Everything else about the MBP was nice though.

Anyone else with the 13z I have found in Intel GFX options dropping the contrast by 10 then dropping brightness by about the same aids in a much more pleasing contrast as the default is indeed quite bright but that's normal for most screens anyway I guess.

Also battery life seems to be improving, squeezing around 4 hours now with wifi on all the time.

My decals should arrive today, will post pics tonight with them on if that is the case.

Just placed the order for a 13z for my folks for Christmas.

I've ordered the £529 special offer in Cherry Red :D

Tell your folks to post their thoughts when they start using it :p

Also, I "think" the Wireless N card arrived today....the seller emailed me the other day saying that HK shipping were being delayed and that I should give it a bit longer to which I accepted and got:

dear friend
thanks your understand.
have a nice day

Cute :p

Also, the Crumpler Side Dig should be here today too!

Tell your folks to post their thoughts when they start using it :p

Will do! However it looks like I'll have to make sure it's been thoroughly configured correctly before handing it over ;) then double check it all again in xmas day! :D

How long did yours take to arrive from clicking order mrk?

I now highly recommend using the Windows 7 built in calibration for colour/gamma as it does a great job as far as laptop screens go :)

More pleasing whites with less "in your face" brightness.

How does this compare with the Vostro 1320 or Samsung X420??

Vostro 1320 for £550:

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8700
4gig Ram
256 MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 9300M GS Graphic Card

Is this laptop better?

Cheers

PC Advisor reviewed it here and someone on a US forum was selling one in black. It looks old-skool and a bit chunky to be honest and has at least half the battery life from the same battery capacity as the 13z.

The GFX and CPU are beefier but going by my experience with the 13z on Win7 x64 I really doubt the beefier cpu will play a noticeable role since the SU7300 in the 13z is very snappy indeed, so much so that I don't find it slow when switching between my 3.5GHz quad core desktop and 13z for general use.

Also note the Vostro only sports DDR2 memory and not DDR3 so upgrading RAM down the line may be costly as DDR2 prices stay pretty high.

Best of all the 13z is properly portable for a 13", the express charger for one is thin and light. You could hand carry the 13z and the power cable in one hand without issue but I'd be scared of dropping it by accident (hence the Crumpler!).

Depends on your requirements at the end of the day I guess.

Any confirmation on the type of trackpad the Vostro uses? After using XPS laptops at work I was pleased to see the same XPS performance in trackpad moevemnt on the 13z, very much more responsive than the new 15.4" Vostros we got in work recently for client builds and of course other notebooks played with in stores (Macbook pro being one).

You (they) will enjoy it I'm sure :p

I'm still getting used to the bright screen, contrast seems to be quite high by default but I have lwoered this in Intel options.
