Yeh I've been following the washed out comments on another website. The comments come with respect to the 2005FPW screen the user also owns: he thinks the colours on it are possible more vibrant and that reds stick out more. He's been doing some fiddling on the 2405FPW though and sounds like he's closer to sorting it. Also, he sounds like someone who doesn't like a bright display anyway.
Another user on another forum has been nothing but positive about this display, and he has just upgraded from a 2005FPW. To quote him:
" I was using the 2005FPW for 3 months with 1680x1050 4xAA 16xAF as my default for HL2 and CS:S. I was very very (note the two very's) satisfied. I am currently in HEAVEN THANKING EVERY KNOWN DEITY FOR THE BLESSING I HAVE RECEIVED playing it on the 2405FPW at 1920x1200 0xAA 8xAF. Can't really put it much clearer than that."
Which sounds good
On another website, this came from another satisfied owner:
"Ok, I got home and have been trying out different Gamecube games on it, and also Gran Turismo. For the GC I have it through component and with Progressive Scan turned on when possible, and for the PS2 its through S-Video (gonna get the component cables soon).
All I can say is wow. The GC games look amazing, I mean drop dead gorgeous. Metroid Prime is stunning, as is Wind Waker. The colors are so vibrant and eye popping it looks superb. I also tried RE4, which looked great, but I didn't see as much of an improvement as I did with the other GC games. Everything looks very nice.
GT4 looks very good, I can't wait to see it in progressive scan through component cables.
Oh, as far as tweaks for the image I changed the sharpness to 1 (the default of 3 or anything higher than that looks very jagged and makes the games look like they really need AA, which they do, but this just makes it very apparent). With the 1 setting it looks much smoother and better (although certain games like RE4 still show a fair amount of jaggies). I also bumped the color saturation to 75 versus the default 50. This is a huge improvement and makes a game like Wind Waker or Mario Kart look a lot better. The colors are much more vibrant and appealing (its pretty similar in effect to nVidia's Digital Vibrance Control if you know what thats like). The only other thing is I changed it to fill the screen instead of keep aspect ratio.
So far even the S-Video looks considerably better than it did on the 2005. I'm actually quite stunned at how much better the Gamecube games look (I only had them going in through S-Video on the 2005, so thats at least part of the reason). Next up is the Xbox through component. I'll hopefully have the PS2 component cables soon as now that I see what a difference it can make I am gonna have a hard time dealing with playing GT4 without them.
Still haven't played PC games on it, gonna probably go do that now. Here's the games I'll test: HL2, Doom3, Far Cry, UT2K4, WoW, and maybe some others that I forget. It'll probably be a little while before I test some of them as I need to go and redownload HL2 before I can play it."
Unfortunately, he's in the US, and I've heard somewhere that there may be a problem running PAL through component (i.e. a region 2 dvd). This is a big issue for me, as I'd like to use this screen with my consoles (currently set to US progressive scan/ HDTV of 480P/720P/1080i so not a prob) and most likely the next gen (could use PAL HDTV of 580P and upwards so could be a prob) as well as my R2 DVD Player (PAL progressive scan so could be a prob). Has anybody/can anybody try a region 2 dvd through the component connects??
