Dell S2716DG - Dells first G-sync

Had my first gaming session on the Dell last night, mainly just messing around in Overwatch's quick play for an hour or two but I'm really impressed !

Loved the smooth game play from g-sync, didn't drop from 142fps (I had it capped as I've read stepping above this in Overwatch disengages g-sync). Speed of the panel was nice, could swing it around & the picture was clear.
Played some FIFA 17 with uncapped FPS & that was sooooo smooth it was really playable. Playing FIFA on the steam link on the 60hz Panasonic is gonna hurt my eyes.

Annoying that Windows sets the DP as the audio default. Started up TeamSpeak & it was set to my Creative X7 as normal but the game was inputted to the monitor (no sound was outputted) ? All my settings are left at default so was strange that the game was set to DP & TS to the X7 ! So I take it the Dell doesn't have any speakers even though it has a volume slider set into the monitors OSD ?

Colours are off coming from my calibrated IPS (though other & myself knew this), this I'll get used too & when I'm playing FPS I'm not looking at the scenery when I'm locked on to someone's face. It's something I'll get use too easily & soon forget about, as other have said it's a trade off.
Brightness from the panel is nice too, I did find with my old screen the backlight did cause me fatigue for longish session. The Dell's panel didn't feel like it was trying to shine through the back of my head.
I do get some pixel inversion on green backgrounds on web pages or test patterns if a small window box is open, I've heard this can be toned down with calibration ?

One thing & I'm sure it just me but did anyone Get underwhelmed with the weight of the monitor ? The Dell's I've had in the past have been tanks, this feels like a cheap £100 one from budget manufacturers.

No,you're right about no speakers built in.There is however a place to plug them in if you wanted to, next to the DP input, aswell as a separate headphone jack on the side.

Yeah seen the port on the side, I gather the volume controls the headphone port on the side then & that's the reason why they've left it in the OSD. I've no tried or need to want to use it just curious.

Yeah the monitor has a built in DAC and headphone port which the volume controls - surprisingly its a fairly decent DAC for something most people will never use - on many monitors that have audio its pretty second rate at best.

Cool, shame they didn't include a mic port too ?

I've had the Dell monitor for about a month now and coming from a Hazro 27" IPS monitor, I'm not hugely keen on the TN Dell.

It just seems too bright or washed out. It doesn't help that I use the Hazro in work now so I see these nice deep colours all day then when I turn on the Dell it's like it's fade too much to bright and can't seem to adjust it enough to be happy.

Once I've started a game it's OK but on first start up it's quite noticeable. In hindsight I should have stuck with another IPS really.

Did you do some research before buying ?
For me coming from the Hazro it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I knew it was a step back in clarity but it was a step up for gaming.
You could always sell it & buy another IPS (gaming) monitor ?
They can fetch good money still on the bay.

After a new monitor now and I've always wanted one of these, but daymn!!!! £690!!!!! I remember when these were £375 from OCUK. holy cow how monitor prices are crazy right now. What is going on with the world!

OCUK are not the only fruit.

But yeh, even the best price you can get is still a big increase on £375.

I really only looked into it a little. I went for TN because of the quality issues with the Acer and Asus IPS screens.

It's fine and once in game I don't notice it. And even with pictures in Lightroom it's OK. I've got it looking pretty good but I'm not mega keen on it. Should have used the 14 days thing but I've had it a month now.

Might try one of the Acer/Asus screens and if significantly better I'll stick the Dell into MM on here. If there's not much in it, I'll keep the Dell.

Acer seemed to be the ones that had the better panel lotto. Though (I believe it's early in this thread) prices went up due to the better QC of Acer & ASUS because of the returns & it's better odds on probably both.

You know the Hazro's were factory calibrated & even if you get a gaming IPS it may not be as good unless you get it done yourself ?

I'm thinking of getting a calibration unit to see if I can get more out of the Dell panel, more money though. Could be a cheaper option if money is tight to buy one & see what it looks like ?

Once you get the Dell dialled in it is so good.

I found I had to reduce green a lot on mine. Now the colours look great.

Monitor Settings:

R - 97%
G - 94%
B - 100%

Brightness - 50%
Contrast - 75%

Nividia Control Panel:

Brightness - 50%
Contrast - 67%
Gamma - 0.60
Digital Vibrance - 49%
Hue - 0%

Shame these don't have a factory calibrated profile like the UltraSharp and other pro range Dells - if nothing else if gave a good reference for finding the best settings.

Yes agreed. You would have thought so for the price as these are more expensive that some of the UltraSharp !

Having had both the S2716DG rev A1 or A2 and now a proud owner of the S2417DG i can say that the S2417DG is the one to get imho. The S27 is a good monitor, no doubt about it, but the S24 comes outta the box much better, with more vibrancy and less issues. Now of course i dont know how the latest revisions of the S27 are doing but compared to an S27 Rev A1 and A2 the little brother s24 is miles ahead and thats sayin something. Now with 100% scaling instead of the 125% windows defaults to on the S24 im really enjoying this "little" gem.

Couldn't say, this is my 1st Dell & its an A03 without issues, though I'm sure if someone pointed them out to me they could be there. I did read some review on the S24 & people do say its the better screen. I couldn't go backwards in size, would feel wrong like stepping down a Res.

Once properly adjusted, the S2716DG is a great monitor for gaming but I found that out of the box it needed quite a bit of adjustment. Got the monitor calibrated and it looks very, very good. I do own a calibration unit already though, so it didn't cost me any extra.

I got one this week.

One thing I've noticed is a VERY slight fluctuation in brightness on the desktop. Almost like a subtle flickering. Any ideas?

Nothing like that on mine ? Using DP & set to 144hz via control panel. There is a setting in there to change between g-sync, ULBM or 144hz. See if changing makes any difference ?

I've had one for just over a month and not keen.

It was an upgrade from a Hazro that I've had for a number of years.

Couldn't get on with it so it's in the MM.
