Diplomatic Immunity

Who gives these people diplomatic immunity. I mean obviously the u.s. has giving deity status to a few but where does that stand on a world stage? What happened if you took it to the International Court of Justice or something like that?

You can’t just give immunity to a select few and their extended families to excuse criminal activity. It was designed to stop despots and dictatorships from gaining a political advantage by trumping up charges, surely that doesn’t apply when it happens in the U.K as we are fellow police enforcers of the World.

He doesn't give a ****, he know's he wont get anything for it, so there's no real issue in being "naughty US, bad US" for a few moments to make him look better. If Boris ever gave a damn about anything other than himself, he wouldn't have wasted our money on invisible bridges, invisible airports, **** buses and taking an "businessperson" for a ride.

U OK hun? x

He knows the country and media think's it is wrong (which it is), so he's jumping on it for his own benefit and saving face as it would look rather bad if he said nothing. There's nothing genuine about him anymore if there ever was.

If in some strange universe his actions meant the US folded, then and only then will I gain respect for him, as should anyone else.

It's funny how the left consider every single Politician who's Conservative or right wing to have some glaring personality defect worthy of endless vitriolic personal attacks

Diplomatic immunity doesnt get you off in incidents like this. That isnt what its for..

Er, yes it is. Its exactly what its for. Its for the Libyan's who shot dead a policewoman in London in the 80's and got to walk out with their all their baggage onto a plane back to Lybia. No charges were brought then either. Its for the Saudi's who killed Adnan Khashoggi in their embassy in Turkey and walked out with a carrier bag with his head in it. Etc.

Diplomatic immunity means whatever you do we can't touch you. And vice versa. And thats the key point its a gentlemans' agreement between countries that means in exchange for letting our embassy spy on your people we'll let you do the same. Incidents like this are collateral damage. It sucks especially when it comes between so called allies but no-ones going to throw out DI for this. The best bet for the family is to do what they're planning to do: fly to the US and attempt to raise the profile of the story and essentially shame the woman into coming forward, its doubtful if any charges will be brought though unless they're willing to stand trial, which seems unlikely.

well it isn't really for that, it gets abused that way yes but really it is simply to stop diplomats from being unnecessarily messed with. In those instances the expectation from a civilised country would be that the immunity would be waived, unfortunately those instances were likely approved from the highest level and weren't just rogue actions of a small group.

If they had done it on the street they would have been arrested. Or even shot by the police. It doesn't make them immune to being hauled in for murder.

It's meant to protect them from forign state interference while they represent their home country. It isn't a pass to do anything they like.

but the purpose of diplomatic immunity is its relevance to the diplomat's job/purpose. Not a get out of jail (litterally) for any action whatsoever (especially by family members)

fromhttps://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/oct/07/harry-dunn-how-does-diplomatic-immunity-work

The barrister Ben Emmerson QC, who took a case to the European court of human rights in 2002 over the US embassy reimposing diplomatic immunity when it lost an employment tribunal case, said road traffic collisions would not be considered by many to fall within the scope of diplomatic immunity.

“The general structure of diplomatic and state immunity,” he said, “is that those activities which touch on the core functions of an overseas mission are usually subject to absolute immunity, whereas peripheral activities – like purely commercial investments or employment contracts with domestic staff – are not.”

Now it seems the husband isn't technically registered in this country as a diplomat. He's just a "spy" working for the NRA. This one is going to get messy.

So basically like most "Diplomats" around the world then lol

Heh, yea :p

I probably should have put employee as I didn't mean to infer anything nefarious with spy, it's just what someone said. The main crux being that since he wasn't officially registered as a diplomat then diplomatic immunity didn't apply.

She should have the decency to hand herself in really, it is definitely an abuse of diplomatic immunity in my view but at the end of the day the US always protect their citizens from extradition and who could blame them? the UK should do the same. If China or some other country claimed that either of you had hacked their government systems and demanded you be handed over to them would you still be in favour of extradition given that China's claim could easily be politically motivated (the same way they've been throwing their own dissidents into camps) and you absolutely won't get a fair trial, actually you wouldn't even get a trial.

All this story really highlights is how 100% worship of legalism (written law) is stupid and a bit of common sense is sometimes needed (take note EU).

Trump has stated even he has driven on the wrong side of the road in the UK by mistake.... Oh as Trump has done it that's ok then. But thoughts and Prays to the family from him.

He didn't say it was ok, try and control your derangement syndrome. He said he's going to try and arrange a meeting.

Never said he said that. I said because he's done it so its ok then. Not sure insults are called for based on my comment to be honest.

Cold cash solution. It is scary 25,000 people are in the UK with immunity i thought it was maybe 1000 top diplomats but wow 25,000 elites is what it is. And people get busted for small things all the time and here you can drive on the wrong side and kill someone and flee the country. If i was family i would feel Britain betrayed me and nothing short of jail would make me feel better. If she does not get jail people should look at immunity no one should jave any immunity. Remember Khashoggi? I guess when they cut him up they also knew that they had diplomatic immunity.
