DirectX 12

W7 non DX12 support is a bonus for AMD's Mantle, more benefit from a hardware performance upgrade than an OS update.

It's probably a lot better for all if the discussion doesn't turn once again into a Mantle Vs the World argument. I'd like to try and read about Plants Vs Zombies 2 as little as possible.

Cash Cow-Zilla riff raff.

So say you're running an NV Titan 2 (as it'll obviously be the best thing since sliced bread lets face it),and purely because you cannot use DX12 on your ageing Windows 7 operating system, you'd go out and buy an AMD GPU instead?

Microsoft are a business and out to make money.

It's not that clear cut though. They absolutely can't have that mindset when it comes to the PC gamers market.
DX12 could be a very big thing. It *should* come to Windows 8/8.1 without any hassle.
But its early success could very much hinge on Windows 7 support, I want DX12 only games (Sure, throw Mantle in too) or DX11/DX12 (With Mantle). I absolutely don't want anything lower than DX11.

Funny when you think about it, buy a new version of windows for the latest direct x, by the time there's a decent amount of games using it the next version of windows is close at hand, rinse and repeat.

any new news on backwards compatibility?

edit: nevermind, all nvidia's DX11 cards will support DX12

Nope, not entirely. Wouldn't be much of an evolutionary step if there wasn't new shader tech needed! Least that's what they'll have you believe .

Only some DX12 features will be available on DX11 cards

First off, find a post that I'm anti DX12, secondly, 'eat sleep..' don't read what's in front of you and base an opinion on what you want me to be saying and not what I'm talking about in the slightest.

Of course you wouldn't run W7 on Titan 2 and not benifit from DX12 making you change to AMD, absolute nonsense suggesting that would happen and not what I'm talking about at all.

Greg wouldn't upgrade to W8.1 until when, a few weeks ago?

But that didn't involve a new DX-in that case he would have been all over it

The whole 1500 Titan 2 users doesn't come into the equation frosty maybe your equation, but definitely not OS adoption.

Mainstream adoption is what counts and as MS don't do a PC game program like GE/TWIMTBP>paid feature support, then omitting W7 DX12 access is a mistake a la Vista:

The whole point of the comment is OS's are the last thing to get upgraded.

<insert smart smarmy comment here:o>

If you want further discussion, keep it nice or not at all.

If they did people would just hack it into 7 anyway, just like when DirectX 11 got hacked into Vista.

Vista on latest SP+Updates added DX11 support directly from MS.

I played BF-BC2 in DX11 on it with a GTX 680 after playing at launch in DX10 on a GTX 580

Game dev Kevin Floyer-Lea DX12/Mantle topic shocker.

D3D12 is definitely a step in the right direction in that regard. As it currently stands there is no reason to see why D3D12 and Mantle can’t co-exist – especially if it turns out that D3D12 is limited to newer versions of Windows.

I noticed that on Linus' latest WAN Show they mention that Win7 won't support DX12. As they said, Win7 is getting on a bit now though.
I'm not overly bother though as I plan to go Win9 when it's out, plus I can always use Mantle.
They also mention a bit about Win9's DRM and Linus says he's not entirely against a subscription model.

Wait so subscription based Windows?? Yay,we can spend more with MS over a few years, just since we are PC gamers.

Remember what happened to DX10,when MS tried the stunt with Vista - it was a failure as many games devs did not bother. Windows 7 has a huge percentage of the market and many games devs know this,as it will make more sense to develop for Windows 7 still, and by extension for DX11.

At least at the very minimum make DX12 partially workable on Windows 7,and then it might see more mass market adoption.

Yeah, i really don't like the idea that you never own it outright, that you have to keep paying someone to use something that is an integral part of your PC.

If it is subscription based, count me out.
