You can easily get nearly all Q6600s to 3.4-3.6GHz "bullet-proof stable".
That's a relief to hear. I was aiming for at least 3GHz when I come to do it.

I would go with the i7 series, the 920 is a great overclocker when given the chance and will serve you well
Fast (3ghz+) Phenom 2s, Core i5s or Core i7s.
Looking at reviews i7 seems to perform about 15% faster clock for clock in games. So a Core 2 Quad @ 3.45+ should also be fine.
I need a new cooler
So, to what extent would a Core 2 duo E8500 (3.16ghz) bottleneck the card?

Not sure if GPUZ supports HD58x0 series yet, so it could be fake. Havn't looked on techPowerUp! recently to see what W1zzard has said about it.
anything under 3.2ghz will limit your system even if you've a hign end graphic card.
My crossfire 4890 doesnt even operate at its full potential because my pci-e will only run at 8x in crossfire= (
I will actually lose 10 frames in Arma 2 if my Q6600 run at stock
I didn't spent very long, as speed wasn't important to me when I got this machine a couple of years agoIf a Q6600 wasn't stable at 2.6Ghz then, without sounding like I'm having a go at you, you're doing something wrong with overclocking it.
Well.. my anticipation for the 5870 just dropped.
I wouldn't put too much stock in Vantage scores. Running it again just now reminded me of how bad of a benchmark it really is.

performance will increase with newer drivers im sure
