Discussion On The ATI Radeon 5*** Series Before They Have Been Released Thread

That said, 2gb and your mobo will be the bottleneck. That mobo is only PCI-E 1.1...I would upgrade your platform or just stick with a 2nd hand 4890 or something.

I would go with the i7 series, the 920 is a great overclocker when given the chance and will serve you well :)

Fast (3ghz+) Phenom 2s, Core i5s or Core i7s.

Looking at reviews i7 seems to perform about 15% faster clock for clock in games. So a Core 2 Quad @ 3.45+ should also be fine.

I need a new cooler :p

So, to what extent would a Core 2 duo E8500 (3.16ghz) bottleneck the card?

Phew! Didn't like the look of all this i5/7 and Quad core talk.

Years ago I paired a new Radeon 9800 pro with an ancient Pentium 2 or 3 in preparation for Doom 3. Hadn't a clue what I was doing and my resulting games playing experience resembled something similar to a flip book :p

Not sure if GPUZ supports HD58x0 series yet, so it could be fake. Havn't looked on techPowerUp! recently to see what W1zzard has said about it.

not really up to date with vantage scores so was wondering if that vantage score is good? if true of course

whats the vantage of a 4870x2 similar setup anyone?

anything under 3.2ghz will limit your system even if you've a hign end graphic card.

My crossfire 4890 doesnt even operate at its full potential because my pci-e will only run at 8x in crossfire= (

I will actually lose 10 frames in Arma 2 if my Q6600 run at stock

those cards running at 8x or 16x wont really give you much a of a performance difference anyway - probably something in the region of a few fps extra (like 2 or 3) so dont worry you arent missing out on much! :D

What's the big deal with quoting images? This isn't the random picture thread - no need to get your panties in a twist.

Anyway, to answer your question muggs, here is my 4870x2 at stock:

Since vantage's CPU scores are highly multithreaded I get about half the CPU score, but the GPU test scores are very similar to the 5870 results. To be honest, I was hoping that the 5870 would offer a bit more of an improvement.

If a Q6600 wasn't stable at 2.6Ghz then, without sounding like I'm having a go at you, you're doing something wrong with overclocking it.
I didn't spent very long, as speed wasn't important to me when I got this machine a couple of years ago :)
But to get the most from the 5870 it sounds like I will either move to high-end i7 or tweak my Q6600 to get a good overclock. Can't do anything until next year, as I need my main machine always available for work until January alas. I'll see how it goes when I get my 5870 with my 2.4GHz Q6600 though and make the decision at that point! :)

I wouldn't put too much stock in Vantage scores. Running it again just now reminded me of how bad of a benchmark it really is.

We'll see, but so far all we seem to be hearing, is it's better than a 4870x2, but not by much..

I'll wait till techreport make a review, then I'll decide what to do.

I have these options.

Sell my graphics card and do the following : Buy a 5870 and a H50 Corsair watercooler. Or crossfire two 5850's.

Keep the graphics card and go for full watercooling (around 200 quid).
Or RAID 0 5 Sammy 1T F1's.

What would you do?

performance will increase with newer drivers im sure

Even still, people will always complain about the performance.

Loads of people were banging on about 'will these cards be much faster than a GTX285, I can't see it myself' and all that rubbish.

Now people are seeing that it's like a 4870X2 in a single GPU, and what do you know? More moaning.
