ok i'm wondering whether i should get just 1 5870 as an upgrade from my 2 8800 GT's, or 2 5870's.

if i get 1 5870 i could sell it if anything better comes out in the next 6 months.. if i had 2 5870's it would have to last at least a year or 2.

firstly im guessing a single 5870 should be a good 80% better than what i have now but not too certain, it has to be a pretty big difference or i wont bother.

what would you lot do?

ive got it up to 3.2ghz before but its not pirticually stable and it just ended in lots of blue screens.. :/ il have to read the oc'ing tips again i guess! also moving from a nvidia card to an ati card....any motherboard issues?
I've got a Q6600 @ 2.4GHz as well, total fail in overclock, it was mega unstable, and for me I need rock-solidness for my work. I'll see how the new ATI card (or Nvidia if they get a move on) goes with it @2.4GHz and decide from there.

are you sure? my Q6600 is running 3.4ghz stable all day long, I used other people Q6600 OCing setup.

Not totally sure, but stability was important. As I said, I will see how it goes with the AMD 5870, and if it's really limiting then I will try an overclock again, or get a new machine. :)

I only tried something like a modest 2.5 and 2.6GHz and it wouldn't stay stable. Machine must be bullet-proof stable though for my work...

If a Q6600 wasn't stable at 2.6Ghz then, without sounding like I'm having a go at you, you're doing something wrong with overclocking it.

anything under 3.2ghz will limit your system even if you've a hign end graphic card.

My crossfire 4890 doesnt even operate at its full potential because my pci-e will only run at 8x in crossfire= (

I will actually lose 10 frames in Arma 2 if my Q6600 run at stock

What's going to be fastest, 2x 5870 in crossfire or a single 5870x2 (assuming these things are predictable) ?
Going by 4870 there's is often not very much in it, in some instances also depending on the motherboard the onboard pci-e bridge does give an advantage.
