Discussion On The ATI Radeon 5*** Series Before They Have Been Released Thread

Crysis: Nice to see the 5870s in xfire beating the 2x 295s in SLI.

As far as 1x 5870 beating a 295, we still have to wait and see, drivers from both camps will be furiously hammered out over the coming weeks. There's a lot more potential for the 5870 to increase its score though.

im banking on nvidia releasing SOMETHING as a stop gap between the 295 and the gt300, even if it is a slightly more improved iteration of a current card (like when ati released the 4870 and nvidia had to compete with a mesely 9800gtx +)

Im getting the 5850, i aint paying the price of the 5870, no point, the 5850 beats the GTX 280 which is good enough for me till next upgrade of dx11 cards come out. Not like any games test these cards much.

Oh christ dont say that, they might be reading this thread :D

I dont see it myself, they would be loosing focus on there new cards for the sake of, possibly retaining the crown over AMD. I would have thought a nice OC on a 5870 would allow it to keep the 295 at bay, but even if it couldnt, the R800 would settle it the day it releases. In effect, they would release a card only to be slapped back down immediately.

I guess it also depends how far away GT300 is, I don’t think anyone is expecting it this year though are they?

nVidia were _supposed_ to be releasing 200 series refresh with 480sp single card and 384sp per core GX2 before the GT300... with ATI beating them to the DX11 post tho there doesn't seem much point in those cards really...

5870 for now but i will be upgrading from 22" to 24" either a bit later this year or next year, thing is arent most of the good 24" screens 300-400? seems a bit steep, think i paid just over 200 for my 22" samsung when i had it.

Still a good screen, only thing that i dont really like about it is the backlight bleed on dark places in games.

Most screens are at least 5ms these days, which is just fine. I've had 5ms and 2ms screens and can't tell any difference.

Unless you are one of those retarded gamers who still used CRT at 800x600 and low detail for 10,0000 FPS....

I just remember reading about one of the NEC monitors and people saying how much better it was than others, but it's pretty expensive.

so is it safe to say between £180-£300 for either the 5850 or 5870, i will hold out for one if so

edit: damn you posted a second before me :D

do you guys think its worth going for the 5870 or will the 5850 be a beast anyway?

early estimations point the 5850 to around 285gtx territory and the 5870 more on par with a 295. I would say this is a massive difference in performance compared to the 4850 and 4870 so Im not entirely sure how true this would be but ah well - we wil see very soon i guess
