Discussion On The ATI Radeon 5*** Series Before They Have Been Released Thread

Be interesting to see how the price/performance of the 5850 compares to the GTX275 as I just bought one for my LAN box.

That said, it wouldn't make much difference anyway as the GTX275 replaced a 4870 which just refused to play GRID without crashing. Now it's fine.

I've also got an HTPC box with suttering issues on BBC HD which is apparently down to the ATI card and a known issue so I'm now looking at swapping that for an NVidia card too! :(

TBH I've never been a fanboy or even had any major brand loyalty, I just buy whatever is the best value at the time and have had numerous ATI and NVidia cards. Recently however I'm starting to lose patience with ATI. Too many niggling issues, lacklustre drivers (from a tweaking/configuration POV) and problems such as microstuttering mean I'll be sticking with NVidia for the time being.

ok i worked some figures out, IF the prices i posted above are near-accurate, this would be the cost of the cards after vat added on @ 17.5%:

Radeon HD 5870 1GB: £290.22
Radeon HD 5870 2GB: £325.47
Radeon HD 5850 1GB: £216.20

do the same @ 15% and you get:

Radeon HD 5870 1GB: £284.05
Radeon HD 5870 2GB: £318.55
Radeon HD 5850 1GB: £211.60

again, im going off the initial US prices i read, your basically talking between £210-£325
depending on the type you go for

I wouldn't put too much faith in the UK vs US prices. Look how we've been screwed over on the Logitech G27 wheel.
US - $399
UK - £329 (ocuk £309)

With no answer from nVvdia they and retailers will sell at an extra premium to snaffle up those few extra £/$ in the time it takes them to come up with one.

Im not holding my breath on any sub £300 prices for a decent one.
