Discussion On The ATI Radeon 5*** Series Before They Have Been Released Thread

well you can get the Value GTX 285 for £200, for the branded 5850's i say starting price probably £240 maybe, which flavours will be released never had ATI, im guessing powercolour, sapphire etc? i dont know, which are the better branded?

early estimations point the 5850 to around 285gtx territory and the 5870 more on par with a 295. I would say this is a massive difference in performance compared to the 4850 and 4870 so Im not entirely sure how true this would be but ah well - we wil see very soon i guess

Last I saw it was more like a 30% difference with the 5850 being on average about 20% over a 285 with a 5870 going head to head with the 295, both cards are looking to be nice jumps over the predecessors, which is great for the consumer and progress. The GT300 early info suggests that will be a real beast, but likely going to be somewhere towards 500-600 quid which means real competition will be 5 series crossfire and the x2 if ATI dont have a refresh ready. That will be interesting, if more than Im happy to spend on a single component. The new mobile parts based on these could be awesome though, mobile parts are closer to desktop than they used to be thats for sure.

im banking on nvidia releasing SOMETHING as a stop gap between the 295 and the gt300

I was listening to a hardware podcast the other night (this week's PC Pro I think) and they mentioned the fact that in a recent interview, when questioned about the ATI 5*** series, Nvidia implied that they thought ATI's focus was a joke, and that Nvidia's focus was on portable chipsets now because that's where the future (and big bucks) are. The implication was that they see top end PC hardware as a small, and not very important part of the business. Which I guess was always true, but as with F1 cars, the technology helps improve basic road cars as well.

So exactly what we can expect from Nvidia in the short term will be interesting. They may well just be pretending not to care about what looks like a big step up for ATI. That's what I'd do in their position. :-)

save all you paper round money lads you might get one in a year.

prices i shall say will be around £250 for low end card and £395 for the 5870,might be interested in the 5870 if it good as they say it will, proof is in the pudding shall wait and see when it arrives.

Based on the reported US prices seen and the euro price seen for 5870 a rough calculation makes the 5870 ~£285 and the 5850 ~£215.

Of course we wont know totally until they are actually on sale and you can buy them.

See http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=14886085&postcount=2071 for the official pricing slide from ATI, cypress (5850 and 5870) are shown between $200 - $400, so even if it's $400 that's still ~£285 with vat.

Brucies price is right :D

well i dont know if there was an official confirmation, i hear many people say they are out on wednesday when overclockers get them in, i read here they are released 22nd in the US and indeed the 23rd over here: http://www.legitreviews.com/news/6471/

they are pricing them different to what ive read, but again lets wait and see:

"According to Fudzilla, the Radeon 5870 (codenamed RV870) will come in two versions initially -- one with 2GB memory and one with 1GB. The Radeon HD 5870 1GB should sell for $399 at launch, while it's bigger sister the Radeon HD 5870 2GB should sell for $449. A slower Radeon HD 5850 with 1GB memory will sell for $299. The Radeon HD 5870 X2 is due to hit shelves about a month after the Radeon HD 5870."

google currency converter shows the prices if true to be:

400 U.S. dollars = 247.249351 British pounds
449 U.S. dollars = 277.537396 British pounds
299 U.S. dollars = 184.1133 British pounds

You need to add VAT to those to get near historic UK launch prices based on US prices.
