i see what you are saying to some degree but as mentioned it is a new tech, better power consumption, smaller die size, faster, apparently cheaper.

also if you had £300 to spend tomorrow you wouldn't get a 295 anyway.

I agree that the 5870 perfomance should be matched against gtx295 if they are similarly priced, but dont forget that the fastest single gpu solution will always carry a premium

also I think we are all getting the feeling now that these cards are coming in at £300 plus

I'm not picking out accurate numbers or dates, i'm just making the general point. The compared card should be whatever it is priced against.

Ultimately, people are interested in what gets them the most performance for their money, with some people taking into account other factors such as noise, power, size etc.

If its price pits it against a GTX285, so be it. If it ends up against the GTX295, then that is what is has to beat, regardless of single or dual GPU setups.

As far as the actual pricing goes, well, the US seems to be getting cards at $399, which directly translates to £244 - i'd expect to see the cards at £300 minimum personally.

edit - for comparison a GTX295 will set you back around $470 (£287) in the US.

The confusion about "what card should be compared to what card" is surely created by the fact that Nvidia & Ati do not release cards at exactly the same time? Therefore, there is never really any fair comparisons until both companies have released their equivalent level cards? i.e. 4870X2 vs GTX295 etc

Personally I can see this happening.
We already know that the 5870 isn't going to be quite as quick as the GTX295, I know these bench marks are based on Beta drivers from ATI, but come-on it never gets that much better, it didn't for the 4870's. That's another problem with ATI cards they have that many compatibility problems in games, drivers are made to fix that instead of increase performance.

But anyway back to what I was saying 5870 will be 15/20% slower than the GTX295 but will also be at least 50% cheaper on the day of release, which means bang for buck fan boys will go ATI all day long. However 5870x2 will probably be 20% faster than the 295, so the e-penis fan boys will go for ATI again.
Then along comes the GTX380 which is probably perform along the same lines of the 5870X2 and still probably cost 20% more, and finally the king of the castle will be the GTX380X2 which will of course start off at £500 about be around 25% quicker yet again.

Just my views based upon last years ATI / Nvidia battle and a few good specs and benchmarks. I know it sounds like I'm in bed with Nvidia, but let me be the 1st to say I had a ATI card all of 2008 and some of 2009, I simply buy the best card at the time, dont care who makes it

They are very big probably's, ha ha and thats just pure speculation, just wait till tomoz then make up your own mind.

To add a little swerve to the thread - with all the new M/B offering SLi and Crossfire;
Which is best? SLI or Crossfire?

SLI and crossfire are essentially the same i would say, but performance is down to the motherboards, ie you could have a PCI-e slot run at x16 and the other pci-e slot run at x4, it all depends really.

their replies are out of order, whether in the rules are not to rip into some one because he using some txt speak is out of order. look in the common decency rules.

Common decency rules? There's no such thing and I don't think 'Eh?' or 'What?' counts as ripping into someone.

oh its "annoying", yo whats up with you babies?, you become so soft/child like that you begin to complain over the smallest of things....maybe ppl hurt the guys feelings and over what, a bit of text speak.....

If his feelings are hurt by someone saying 'What?' then I have to wonder who the baby is

its you complainers who are being nasty/bullies here, its you complainers who are at fault here

I didn't even say anything to him but you know, I think I might now just because it annoys you quite so much.

ok i see where you are with comparing prices but then other factors would come into it.

reportedly a new 5870 can hit 188w on load. a 295 hits over 400w so it then enters a different market. those who have a 450w psu can upgrade to one of these without changing there psu. they can't run a 295 without upgrading there psu aswell which then incurs more cost.
