Distasteful vegan TV ad

I haven’t got it in me. It would disturb me.

It would disturb the majority of people. That’s why we have abattoirs and professional slaughtermen

And not all of us have the time and pay for the convenience. For better or worse our whole way of life and economy is built on these ideas.

There's no escaping the fact that it's inherently immoral to rear animals at such scales purely for sustenance where a good portion of it ends up as waste because the people buying it don't respect where it's come from.

I think that every advert that involves meat should include either pictures or video of said animals being slaughtered and not because of veganism but because people live too sheltered from the consequences of their choices. I'd also ban any content showing needless waste for the sake of 'views'.

Yeh but isnt that like saying every mobile phone advert should have a video of the kid working in the lithium mine to make the battery. As consumers we demand this stuff and money is the driving factor.

I think that is hypocritical myself.
I completely disagree. It’s in no way hypocritical to eat an animal but be unable to kill them. Human emotions get in the way.

Do you think I’m the only one who couldn’t do it? The vast majority of people are the same. It’s part of becoming an evolved and civilised culture.

It is and that should happen in every case of inconvenient truths that the public would rather shy away from.

Should every clothing advert show Asian children working their fingers to the bone for a pittance?

I agree with you, some of the viewpoints on this thread are hilariously stupid.

I do think as a society we are a little too distanced from the food we eat. If people were faced with the reality then perhaps there would be less waste as a result.

I honestly don’t think people are as distanced from it as you might think. I don’t know one person who isn’t fully aware of the reality of where their meat comes from.

It's mostly cognitive dissonance.

Examples of cognitive dissonance

Some examples of cognitive dissonance include:

  • Smoking: Many people smoke even though they know it is harmful to their health. The magnitude of the dissonance will be higher in people who highly value their health.
  • Eating meat: Some people who view themselves as animal lovers eat meat and may feel discomfort when they think about where their meat comes from. Some researchers refer to this as the “meat paradox.”
  • Doing household chores: A male might believe in equality of the sexes but then consciously or unconsciously expect their female partner to do most of the household labor or childrearing.
  • Supporting fast fashion: A person might be aware of the effects of fast fashion on the environment and workers but still purchase cheap clothes from companies that engage in harmful practices.

I though it was a bit obvious no? The shutters that block it from view, the images of diseased lungs, 2nd hand smoke warnings?
That’s on the packaging, hardly an advertisement. People have already decided to buy the cigarettes.

If there was no advertising for meat products, people would still eat it.

Advertising is not even needed for certain things a lot of the time.

We just had the leg of Poppy at the weekend, one of our lambs. I didn't kill it personally just because I don't have the knowledge on how to do it but I helped raise it and it was lovely :)

Hypocrite

Seriously though, interested did you raise it at home? Are you a farmer? I love leg of lamb.

Is it expensive to have a lamb killed, butchered and sent to you in cuts?

I remember in school being shown a video about the slaughter house. I get the feeling there was a vegan teacher trying to promote their cause.

It was very graphic and intended to shock. My father is a gamekeeper so it didn't shock me, though many claimed to be going vegan after watching the video. But most went back to eating meat within the week.

My principle is as long as you eat what you kill, or buy, then there isn't an issue. I find food wastage to be the insult to the animal.

I honestly never waste any meat product. If I’m unable to eat it it, it goes in the freezer. Unless it’s spoiled, in which case it has to be discarded

We have a farm, mainly a stables/livery and arable but we have had sheep and cattle for a couple of years now as well.

Not sure what the butchery cost, probably nothing as it's all scratch my back etc in the farming community. Like our waste hay & horse manure is collected for free by someone who can use it, then they do us a favour in another way. My partner had asked for the brain to eat, but that needs to be stained and tested nowadays, so she didn't get it.
