My options are buy free range or support battery hens.

Even if the free range isn't perfect, that's the route I'm going. Not eating meat isn't an option.
They’re your principles and well done for sticking to them, as long as you realise many can’t financially afford to have those principles. It doesn’t make them a worse person.

last year i tried to rescue a young rabbit which had been run over in our car park..... i took it outside and let it go and it just span round on the spot and could not lift its head. I broke its neck. i got huge stink eye and a couple of comments of how cruel it was............................ to which i said no gorping at it and letting it die slow was the cruel option.

Yes, it certainly goes the other way, where people can't see things objectively and think that keeping something alive in terrible pain and exhausting all options is the right thing to do.

Just as people don't put their dog to sleep when it's been struggling for months.

There are a lot of varieties of free range. I'm not opposed to barn hens with space and enrichment. The hens here seem happy enough.

Meat birds on the other hand.. Won't touch that with a barge pole

There are lots of reasons to go vegan / vegi.
IF i went that way it would be for carbon footprint reasons.
BUT the people who make me smile are the ones who consider themselves Pescatarians

again, if it is for environmental reasons and they were to argue a rod caught fish that they got themselves was environmentally sustainable then fair enough (you could do the same for any shot wild fowl - the ultimate in free range really).... just dont try to take the moral high ground on meat being murder whilst eating a can of john west tuna.

I agree that battery chickens in particular are poorly treated. I should buy corn fed free range but i wont lie........... i dont!. the price difference is terrible, but more than that, even if you do get those, i highly doubt chicken in pub food, or birds eye crispy chicken is so eithically sourced.

so i accept that whilst it is horrible, and is probably wrong, IF it is to be stopped it needs to be via legislation....... until then i will bury my head in the sand.

I don't judge people for buying what they're able to buy. If a family are struggling I don't think anyone would begrudge them for chasing value. I, myself, am not a fan of battery hens and while I have the 'luxury' (lol it's just chicken) to pick free-range that doesn't mean I think anyone who doesn't is a bad person. It's the same with fish. I try, where possible, to have ethically sourced fish.

it's most certainly not a "I'm better than you because I prefer ethical meat/fish" not in the slightest. I just find it aligns with my own view of morals to do things the way I do them. Not saying my way is the de facto way. It's just the way I like to do things.

When you say ethically sourced fish, does that mean sustainable fishing?

Yeah that's how I should've described it. I don't like to support overfishing. I like Tuna steaks but I try no to eat them too often
I’ve noticed lately when buying fish that some of it says sustainably sourced and others say responsibly sourced. Not really sure of the difference tbh

This makes no sense, all egg laying hens are killed anyway, and free range is a con, the barn is the cage.

You're paying for the same cruelty.

its a sliding scale and everyone has a different tipping point.
barn chickens may not be free range but they are a far cry from battery chickens.......

I eat meat, but i wouldnt eat shark fin soup for instance and i would not buy ivory..... that would not buy me much respect from a vegan, but it is where i draw the line, and it is my line to draw for myself (so long as within the law)

They are all killed anyway, but at least if you're going to buy eggs, buying spacious barn hen eggs is better than the cheap eggs.

Ask yourself.. Would you rather be in the hens position in the open barn or hen in the cramped cheap eggs.

If you have a preference. It makes a difference

Not buying meat is even cheaper, most vegan foods are the cheapest available, pulses, pasta, bread, vegetables. It's only when you factor in meat replacements the costs start to add up.

Or just dont buy eggs? 9 birds per square metre isnt spacious.

Why isn't it an option?
Because I want to eat meat. I like eating meat and it has health benefits. If you don't want to eat meat/dairy etc then you do you. I, however, will continue to eat meat and I'll do so in a way that sits well with me. That means not supporting battery hens and where possible making a choice for the more ethical option.

So as I said. My options are eat free range or battery. I pick free range.

I agree. If I couldn't have hens I wouldn't have eggs.

But that's not going to happen. Obviously that's best. But few will give up eggs.

Its a super sensitive subject.. Because it makes people uncomfortable. And it makes people uncomfortable often if they are questioning thier choices.
Do I have more respect morally for vegans than meat eaters? Yes.
Am I full vegan. No.
Do I judge myself for that. Yes.
Could I do more? Yes.
Am I too selfish to not? Also yes.

Its uncomfortable to think about for sure.

I want to kick a dog, I like it, if you don't want to kick dogs that's fine but don't tell me what I can and cant do.

How do you "ethically" chop an animals head off?

So it's an option that you choose out of preference, not that it's an option that isn't available to you?
