Have a guess how sick piglets are killed in the UK?, Il just tell you, they smash them into the floor. Not much better than using a sledgehammer.
I can't say as to the realities of what happens on pig farms day to day, I wouldn't be surprised to find some flouting the regulations, etc., but it is only a method which is supposed to be used in an emergency situation (i.e. where the piglet is suffering) and by someone trained in the procedure not just any old farm hand on any old pig.
Not buying meat is even cheaper, most vegan foods are the cheapest available, pulses, pasta, bread, vegetables. It's only when you factor in meat replacements the costs start to add up.
Personally I find a lot of vegetables utterly unappetising, to the point some make me feel revolted physically* (which I can understand if some have that reaction to eating meat knowing where it comes from). Can't say I'm happy eating meat, none the less the quality is inferior to what it could be of something which was synthesised, but in reality there are poor substitutes for it so far and I'd struggle to be able to eat healthy without.
* To an extent some people can't understand at all - for example parsnips the look, smell, taste and texture in any form I find gag response inducing yet I'm perfectly fine with horseradish as a condiment.
