Doctor Who

That episode brought about more unanswered questions!!

I am very desperate to know why the astronaut killed him and who the child who regenerated is.

These episodes are more like 45 minute teaser trailers!

so true.

I really hope there is more of an overall plot arc this series, rather than it being 90% monster of the week stuff.

Don’t get your hopes up, i think it will be like last season where the eps written by the main writers will be the arc stuff and the rest will be monster of the week with a hints about what’s going on, so 5 eps about the arc 8 monster of the week.

I think its the way the show is being written doesn’t easily allow for a full arc stuff.

I don't know. they don't have to do one or the other.

Monster of the week stuff can tie in with the overall plot of the season if it's done right. But you're probably right, mostly monster of the week stuff. It's whats easy to digest for the masses.

The masses that you're superior to, obviously? :p

Not in the least

It's a proven fact that monster/mission/adventure of the week based shows are successful in obtaining high viewing figures. Viewers don't have to keep track of a show every week, and can just jump in whenever they feel like without having to catch up on a few years worth of mythology.

Why do you think the many Star Trek and Stargate series are still running in syndication...

I like the monster of the week stuff as much as the next person, but they can have their cake and eat it so to speak, if it's done right.

So... could that be why it's rare to see Buffy repeated? I mean, i'm a fan of Star Trek but i do understand what you're getting at - maybe things would be so different if there wasn't so much **** on TV and people actually payed attention to stuff that has some artistic merit.

Well they tried a heavy arc based show with Outcasts (damn it was awful), and it failed miserably. Who knows what that says for the state of tv. Doctor Who has probably hit a good medium.

Heroes landed around the 3-4 million viewer mark on BBC2 when it was in it's prime (Before season 4 :(). Doctor who last year had anything from 6.5-8.5 million, with 10 million tuning into the series 5 premiere.

Did outcasts not suffer from the lack of new ideas when it comes to Sci-fi, rather than the format? Most modern sci-fi is essentially a soap in space, or a scary soap on Earth.

As for Heroes... that really peaked at the end of the first series. I really think it would have been better for that just to have ended then. Why do they feel the need to milk something dry when they could just have left a great thing be great?

The fact can not be ignored that the shows produced under RTD's reign were very much written 'for the masses' ie, lowest common denominator. ie eastender shot in the style of holyoaks and set in space. Certainly, my uncle in law finds the Moffat reign 'boring', and my mother in law 'confusing', because they arent tuning in for the latest arc in an epic sci-fi canon.

I for one welcome the change of pace with open arms because it now feels like proper Sci-Fi. I can foresee it selling in this format extremely well internationally. If that means a few disgruntled middle agers are not catered for, so be it.

Re: the latest episode, the bit with Amy going into room, the door shutting, and her getting a message from herself on her hand. Proper scary.

Knock RTD all you want but he did know how to sell a sci-fi shows to the "masses" (as you would put it), there isn’t a lot of sci-fi shows left on TV now.

You can have shows with season arcs, 24 went for 8 years so it can be done.
