Doctor Who

One of the best Xmas specials from Who. In the Moffat era the Xmas specials have all be light hearted affairs and have always been awful as they totally miss the mark.

The look on Capaldi face when River says she borrows the Tardis and the doctor never finds out was great :D

I thought Capaldi's acting in the special was brilliant but that bit in the episode his faces were absolutely brilliant as well as his 'reaction' to finding out the Tardis is bigger on the inside and always wanting to do that. :D

Both were good, but I think the preference for which Doctor often depends on what stories you like, and when you first watched it.

I'm liking Capaldi as the Doctor, even if I think a lot of the stories are relatively weak and could do with being longer, but like some of the stories from the Baker era a lot more (but that may be partly because of the age I was when I watched them).

Isn't there some saying about you can tell a Doctor Who fan's age by their favourite doctor?

Tom Baker has always been my favourite and I think that's why I like Capaldi. He reminds me of Tom Baker.

Really? I would say Capaldi is quite a grim doctor despite the glasses and guitar. Baker is "Jelly baby anyone?"

I'm wondering if Capaldi is inspiring the writers to grow up a wee bit instead of having everyone run everywhere for ten minutes (at least). I wonder if there will be a new companion. I can see the End of Doctor Who approaching...

The next doctor is going to be really interesting. The precedent has been set now, we can have a woman and different race.
River Song did say she had a wife. The next doctor perhaps? That would take the series in a new direction. Great Christmas special and Capaldi is such an excellent actor!

I dont think so as dont forget she was also only looking for the Doctor with a specific set of 12 faces as "he cannot have a different face", so she wouldnt have had a female doctor "wife".

They've stopped showing it at kid-friendly times, haven't they? I do like Capaldi as the Doctor; I stopped watching Matt Smith.

It helps that Capaldi has a bit more range as an actor the writers know they can throw a bit more at him.

As for Baker I just finished watching his run and I wouldn't say he was that kid friendly, you get the feeling sometimes the only reason the bad guy was still standing is because he didn't feel like hitting him.

One of the surprised of watching classic who you see the doctor going about shooting, hitting and fighting people :)

He reminds me of Jon Pertwee far more than he does Tom Baker, but that's probably just down Jon Pertwee being "my" Dr Who as it were.

I think that all the doctors have been very good to be honest, the main thing that differentiates them is the quality of writing and lets be honest. For the past 4-5 seasons it has been absolutely dire at times. Matt Smith was great when he was given anything good to work with but that was unfortunately a rarity.

That was a cracking christmas episode however. I can actually say that River Song was really good as well. Usually I really really can't stand her and smugness and arrogance and always saying sweetie. She was by far my least favourite character before the last episode but she managed to be likeable and not annoying to the point of wanting her knocked off.

I hear that Steven Moffat has left Dr Who and will be replaced by the guy who did Broadchurch. If thats true then thats an interesting change of style, will be curious to see how that changes Dr Who

I look forward to 13 episodes with a story arc based around the Doctors last regeneration with Moffat killing him off for good in the last episode.

Build an arc that would be a first, also the final episode will try to do something "smart" that will make everything before it meaningless.

Chris Chibnall probably the only choice to replace him. I remember he done some of the better episodes of Torchwood but his track record for Who is a bit spotty.

Also the reasoning Moffat gave was a bit... rude. He said that 2016 was a "bad year because of the Euros and the Olympics". How dare the Olympics get in the way of his show

That's not actually what was said. Or who said it

Explaining the decision to hold Moffat’s last series until next year, BBC1 controller Charlotte Moore said: “I have decided to schedule Steven’s big finale series in Spring 2017 to bring the nation together for what will be a huge event on the channel. 2016 is spoilt with national moments including the Euros and Olympics and I want to hold something big back for 2017 - I promise it will be worth the wait!”

It might will be, but I can't imagine Capaldi will be particularly happy with it. Didn't he say that he could happily make Doctor Who all year round? Also the reasoning Moffat gave was a bit... rude. Well I see today that its being said that Capaldi is likely to be leaving so that Chris Chibnall can forge his own doctor. Short lived tenure as Dr for Capaldi if thats true.
