Door locks - replacement advice needed

major thread revival

our upvc front door lock has been playing up recently and last night it finally died

just ordered a ABS Avocet lock for it and now started to look at door handles

are Hoppe PAS24 still the ones to go for? where is best/cheapest place to buy them? i see there are a few different models like Tokyo, Birmingham, etc, is this just the design? im after a white set of handles

thanks

Because we have just fitted ABS thumb turn locks and there is a position the thumb turn can be set to which means you can not open the door from the outside even if you have a key. Therefore if the door was latched you could find yourself locked out even with the key in your hand.

Hmm. I was thinking of getting ABS turnthumb locks all round. Should I not? I do have back access to the house so could just use the kitchen door if the worst happens?

It interesting what they say about informing your house insurance, though.

Why do you need to do this?

Why do you need to do this?

Thumb turn locks are considered less secure as someone could break the glass and unlock the door, if if already having entry they may unlock the door and use it to remove more stuff from your house as its an easier exit.

yes thats my thinking too although another school of thought is if there was afire in the house (god forbid) you need to faff around trying to find keys and then opening the door lock with it, this with a terrified family behind you is not as easy as it sounds...

I can imagine it being 1000x worse then my scramble for the keys when someone knocks at the door first thing in the morning. So, is it definitely an insurance problem?

Chaps some advice please

I just fitted an abs lock on front door, my old lock was 50/50 so got like for like

Does it protrude out too much on the outside? It's like 3mm

I think 50/45 (ext) maybe just pushing it a little, what you think?

Looks fine to me. Thats how they come pre-fitted to the doors I fit. 5mm less wont make any difference as to snap it they will just bar the handle off or smack a screwdriver into the lock. Being an ABS it should be resistant to these attacks anyway and hopefully just seeing the 90o keyhole will deter them.

Thanks mate :)

ok just ordered some kit:

4x Hoppe Tokyo handles
3x ABS Avocet locks
1x Yale As Platinum
1x Mul-T Lock XP Secure (Garrison)

bought from mixture of ebay shops and online stores (brand new)

Been putting off changing the locks for a while now in our house. The fact that I need 3 new locks for the front and 2 for the back puts me off as the locks are £50 a piece pretty much!

Having just one key for the entire house appeals though! If I don't want to get all the locks done at the same time does it cost me extra to have new locks keyed to my current locks if I buy them at a later stage?

I'm thinking about replacing the 2 locks on the front French doors and the inner front doors Yale lock with Avocet ones. Then at a later date replacing the 2 locks on the French doors to the rear of the house.

this is the cheapest option for ABS Avocet for French doors which are keyed alike plus 6 keys: http://upvcspares4repairs.co.uk/avocet-abs-euro-cylinder-pair-6x-keys.html

i ordered a pair today.

i don't like the idea of having one key for the whole house, rather have the extra layer of security and have separate keys per door. (as silly as it sounds)

Cheers mate. Great price that. Will only cost me £150 to redo the front and back cylinders. Just need to suss out if the Yale lock on my inner front door will be a straight swap too but that doesnt look too expensive either. 6 keys too is a bonus!

Yep, I Googled all day to find that link lol

Is very cheap and 6 keys.

Can't believe the cylinders are so easy to change, ive been putting it off for ages thinking I'd have to get a lock Smith out to swap them,

Hmmmm i sent an email asking if i bought 2 sets of the matched pairs of Avocet locks would they be able to be keyed alike. I got a reply saying they wouldnt be able to key them alike and id have to put together a bespoke build....

This thread has got me looking at replacing my cylinder locks so I went around checking the sizes I would need for my doors. Thankfully the two main doors have the same size lock so I can use this offer to get those replaced.
I'll then get the key code from the first set of locks and get some more built to code (from whoever is cheapest) to make all my doors work off the same key.

Just swapped the locks on our French doors to abs, bit of faffing around as had to drill into the frame to get at the screw for the Lock, this video helped a lot

https://youtu.be/9VTZgj0IQEo

I'm a little confused by the change of lock on the second door in that video. Surely you could have performed the same action minus the faff of removing the plate and drilling holes by simply opening the second door and removing the lock like the first?
