Drones over gatwick..

The police will probably start treating all environmentalist protestors as terrorists in waiting on the back of this, just attending a protest will probably get you added to a watch list.

Given the amount of disruption the few self righteous environmental protestors cause to the many, this is exactly what should be happening.

In my mind they are terrorists. Like greenpeace hijacking ships, or those animal rights protesters threatening farmers.

Non-violent protest, however irritating, is not terrorism. It's not helpful to misuse terminology like this. When you get into direct harassment of individuals, or digging up people's grandma's like the animal rights bunch then I agree it's terrorism, when you're talking about blocking bulldozers or chaining yourself to railings, it's not.

Incidentally, I still think it's highly unlikely this incident is an environmental protest, they're usually keen to claim credit.

Setting out to intentionally disrupt or endanger without any consideration can be considered terrorism, but even if its not, its still profoundly undemocratic to allow a small number of people to intentially disrupt the thousands going about their every day lives.

No basis at all, the government has no ******* clue so they're just going to randomly blame someone and hope it works out, what a farce.

The worst thing is the drones weren't even carrying any bombs, they could literally fly over Number 10 and take out the PM and they'd have no recourse, ******* disaster. Or hell you could coordinate dozens of them and totally destroy all the planes in an airport.

I've raced RC cars in my youth. One of the annoying things back then was when someone had the same frequency and they would take over controlling your car.

Isn't it possible to do that with drones? That if you are standing closer to a drone and on the same frequency, isn't it possible to take over the flying?
That only works if you are using an analogue radio signal - only really cheap toy drones use that. Plus on most decent drones you can automate their route without any manual control needed.

It's insane to me how they weren't able to catch the operator or at least recover the drones.

Yes, it's a large area etc. They also had police helicopters and millitary SIGINT on site, it wasn't a small operation by the end. If nothing else you could just see where the thing ends up landing with the police helicopter...

Still no credible footage of this drone yet then? All we have so far are some shaky videos (one in daylight, one at night) with no time stamp or identifiable landmarks so could have been any time and anywhere.

How many thousand cameras were in the hands of the public in and around Gatwick for the 24 hour or so period? Good cameras, like SLRs, camcorders etc, and yet all we got were two dodgy videos.

Well, I think most of the people who were in Gatwick refused to come out just in case it all finished and their flight can leave. Also, isn't there that security section that once passed if you leave you can't go back or something? Another reason for people not to leave and capture anything?

Most of the captures I've seen were external to the Airport and that would have been a fair more distance away than if you were on site and didn't give a damn about getting back into the secure section to rejoin your flight (which is no one I gather at this time of year). So it wouldn't matter if you had amazing cameras, without the lenses and good skills to show stuff like perspective on the target, etc, which not many people know to do, then it's the reason why we get what we have despite having great equipment around technically speaking.

It doesn't really matter how many cameras were in an area, if they're not pointed in the right direction with a suitable lens at the right time.

It's surprisingly hard to get a picture of something small, fast moving and probably not right next to you, especially when you have no idea where it's going to show up next (ask any wildlife photographer;))
When it's in poor light it gets even harder.

Not to forget that most of the "cameras" in the area would be camera phones which don't really have a great sensor for low light conditions, and typically don't have a good lens for getting distance shots of something small.

If this is / was a large commercial drone, as stated, then they aren't particularly quick or nimble. I know they're hard to get with a mobile phone camera, but if I can film a 3D helicopter going all over the sky from 100m away with a budget camcorder and make a decent video, someone should be able to get a shot of this thing that's good enough to identify it.

EDIT: I see it's started again. So, if anyone lives near Gatwick, get your cameras out!

Its probably a Mavic 2 which isn't that large, my Mavic Air can be hard to spot at 100m up and 200m away in the day and i know its exact location, let alone someone outside the airport with the drone over 500m away.
