Easyrider's Playon HD mini review thread.

Easy no ETA on when the GUI and firmware will be released??...or has it been released officially??

Also looking at getting one of these universal remote controls but would like one that controls the AC Ryan playon hd mini, my xbox360 and my Sammy LCD TV....any recommendations??.

hey all, i've just come across the A C RYAN PLAYON HD MINI on a website and am very tempted because of the price for getting one to use as a media player for my tv.

Am I right in thinking if I had an external HDD I could plug it in via USB to this and then this could play the tv shows / films / music on it? So in theory I could have a HDD for each and plug which ever one I wanted in to use?

Obviously the cost is a big plus point, but would this be adequate as a mini media pc like build compared to a full on media pc which would cost £250+

Correct. So far I've only used mine with an external HDD connected via USB and it's perfect.

Cool, sounds good.
What are the menus like to use? Do they show previews, covers or descriptions? And would the latest ones come with the most recent firmware?

The menu's are very responsive - I've not had any issues with any stutter/lag as of yet.

The box I received was on firmware r3582 which is the current official release.

All the software you could ever need is here:

If you look back in the thread there are some pointers relating to the YAMJ Movie Jukebox Software which can be downloaded from AC Ryan and sets up all the Meta data for your media.

Great stuff, thanks for your help.
Can't find it anywhere cheaper than £80 inc VAT at the moment so will try and order one, with a hdmi splitter and a 2TB external hdd for all my films, music and TV shows :D

you mention yamj, will i be able to use that if i'm not going to be connecting it to a pc? because i was planning to store everything on an external drive connected to the playon hd mini

I'm guessing it's possible to connect the Playon HD to a wired network, then stream media off another PC on this network (ie shared folders on a another PC on the network)? Or do you need WMS or similar?

That's right - It can play directly from CIFS/SMB (So windows shares or via SAMBA on Linux) & NFS. It can also stream from UPnP devices.

I play everything from my FreeNAS server share via NFS.

Thanks for the info:)

right ok, so if i plug the box in and run the software it will create the files it needs of obtaining all the information from the net etc i suppose.

I have one of these and this is how i have it setup...my playon is connected to the net via a wired connection....But i have yamj on my laptop...i have my ext hd connected to my laptop...so if i add any new movies/files and need the boxart etc...all i do is run the yamj app which brings up a dos box...goes through all the files...saves whatever it needs to then writes it to my ext hd...i then connect my ext hd to my playon, turn it on and browse to the yamj box and let it load up..after about 20 secs or so all my movies come up with the relevant boxart.
