Easyrider's Playon HD mini review thread.

For anyone streaming media over a network (ie from another pc or similar) how does the playon perform when FF/RW? Also does it have a "jump to" function?

the FF/RW is a little jumpy for me on 10gb MKV's (blu-ray) and I dont have the jump function for it.

But on DVD ISO's the jump is good and so is the FF/RW

I've got mine across powerline network

arrived today with my 2tb drive :) spending the night setting it up

got some films on it and gave it a test and worked a treat with yamj

just a quick question though, if you dont like the cover that it displays for a film...can it be changed? and how does yamj determine if a file is hd so it displays the hd icon with the cover?

also couple of other questions, can the skin be changed? and when i run yamj gui and click save it saves an icon to the desktop but if i double click on it i get an error about java not being recognised even though i have it installed

Cheers!

Got the playon mini set up with some dvds and tv series on there for the time being and seems to be working ok.
Think eventually I will still get a media pc for the living room as originally planned and move the playon into the bedroom to access

Thanks for the info :) Mine will be over a 10/100Mbit network so I imagine it will fine.

Just to clarify, does it have a "jump to" function or not?

I've also got a lot of film thumbnails/dvd artwork/fanart/.nfo in the folders of my films after doing scraping via media portal - will the playon HD mini recognise this or does it do the scraping itself? Also is it easy to set up the mini so it displays the artwork/film info etc as per images earlier in the thread? I know this may have been answered before but don't know whether new firmware/software has changed this.

After you have scraped all the info via your media portal, i use EMM myself...just run the YAMJ update so that it uses that info. Just make sure its pointed at your partition where your movies reside.

You can get the YAMJ update tool from the AC Ryan website...just install it and follow the instructions...works an absolute treat on my playon andd i get all the relevant info after i have scraped using EMM then running the yamj update utility.

It does indeed - there's a 'goto' button on the remote that allows you to skip chapters (if the file has them - the remote's next/back function does this also) and also goto a specific time.

The box also has a resume from last viewed feature that works very well and seems to work for multiple files too - not sure if there's a limit on how many but I tested 3 and it worked perfectly.

The remote has two buttons down at the bottom (labels escape me ATM) that allow you to jump 1 minute back/forward.

Rewind / Fast-forward have been ok. My experience has been that anything above 4x back or forward seems to cause issues but I very rarely use this feature anyway.

Sorry to keep asking questions, but how does the playon HD mini compare to other media streamers like the WDTV and Asus one? Anyone got any views?

If it helps I'll mostly be streaming video files (mkv, vob, maybe the odd iso but normally convert them to a video file straight off).

Just get the playon.

Its cheap and plays all the files you need.
