Easyrider's Playon HD mini review thread.

Thanks for that Holwill, I'll take a look and see what I can do.

So what kind of transfer rates do people get? I seem to be doing something wrong, as when I transfer a file from my PC to the Playon I get about 4.32mb/s which is useless. If I transfer something between my laptop and PC I get about 7.00mb/s so I know it is not the network.
Any ideas?

i have the same issue but mine is with my NAS box which is gigabit but my laptop and playon arent gigabit enabled...so transferring files from my laptop to my NAS usually gets me around 8-9mb/s but if i connect using my ext hd i get around 15mb/s using a usb2 connection.

How do you have the network connected??..are you using a switch or a router to connect your devices because in theory on a 100mb/s network, around 4-7mb/sec sounds about right.

How can i record freeview with such an item is it possible with the Playon ?

For example can i plug freeview decoder into the box in anyway.

Thanks jay.

Edit: Sorry for being lazy just wondered if anyone has a work around before i google.

No unless you have the DVR version of the playon...even then i dont know if that will record freeview.

I have a pretty standard network, router etc. gave up on the networking, so now I just plug the PlayOn in to the PC via the USB cable and it sees it as an external drive. Simply just drag and drop the files, much better speeds of 20-40mb/s (fluctuates a lot randomly). Although now when ever I am done the PlayOn crashes and I have to unplug the power cable :( nothing is ever simple!

Oh and my YAMJ does not work properly :( it uses fanart and backdrops as the DVD covers, and some even have weird flags on the front (i.e English/French)

Hmmm regarding the crashing...have u updated the firmware for your playon??.

As for Yamj??...i had the same problem but i solved it by using EMM aka ember media manager along with yamj. If you look back a few pages in this thread...someone posted up instructions on how to get both of them working ie you use EMM to download the fanart covers etc and then using that info you run yamj to save the index file on your playon hd.

Heres the post, its post #145...just set it up like Mittens has it on the screenshots...i used his instructions and now yamj runs flawlessly.

Not updated the firmware yet, going to do that next :) Does that include the new GUI that easyrider posted several pages back? If not how do you get that?
I am using EMM but not how Mittens had it setup, so I'll try that and hopefully it will work.
Currently transferring 2TB of DVD/Blu-rays - taking a while :p

Probably not...the new GUI wont be out for a while yet i think....there are instructions but the way i did mine was download the new firmware onto my usb mem stick...extract as it comes in a zip format....once done then just plugged it into my playon...turned the playon streamer on then my tv, browsed to where the settings are, scrolled down and just pushed ok on the bit that says update firmware...takes a few mins to do it but its fairly harmless procedure really.

Yep just use Mittens instructions and in theory it should work...mine works perfectly fine now.

Hmmm just tried with the new settings and didn't help :( Most of my movie covers are either not right OR have a small US/UK flag in the top corner which is strange.
Also once I click on the movie cover, the image inside is of really poor quality, really pix-elated.

Alright last complaint from me.
The movie Jukebox is not working and I've wasted enough time on it. Forget the bad/wrong pics I can't even play my Blu-Rays from there :( DVD's work fine but Blu-Rays won't. Not really that impressed with the O/S this thing has.
This is for my dad so want it to be as straight forward and easy as possible but seems to have lots of little bugs that are annoying.
Oh well just have to tell him to use the browser. Lame.

So what does everyone think I should do.

Have been using my WDTV Gen 2 for a year but have a playonhd mini and WDTV live arriving today/tomorrow. Basically for my mates but I get my pick so will take either the Mini or the Live.

I realise this is the Playon thread so a little biased but I am really looking for stability and ease of using thumbgen to create the movie info. Anyone had experience on both? I would definately say the playon but the new GUI is STILL not released and it has been delayed about 10 times, whereas I know the Live menu and know its fairly speedy and functional.

Opinions?

Cheers.

I don't have any experience with Live, but my experience with Playon was pretty 'meh'. It is a very decent little machine and probably one of the best bargains around! However, it certainly has it's issues, with crashes, not always working how it should (Blu-Ray sound etc) the menu system is quite frankly awful (the new GUI might sort that out). In reality you get what you pay for, cracking little machine but nothing compared to my HTPC.
So if you think Live is cool and you like how it performs, stick with that.

Hello again,
I did go for the playon for a 'change' but have to agree with clipsey above that the player is bug riddled. I am having issues which I have posted on the AV forums, on the official AC Ryan forums and have had no replies, leading me to believe that my playon is just ****!

Will just copy and paste the other thread as it is now very comprehensive as I have tried most things! I am desperate to get this sorted so any help is very much appreciated.

All I want is stable firmware that I can connect to my network and have thumbgens work perfectly!

My mini came with 4624 which freezes with thumbgen if you scroll to fast, so I heard 4107 was the best for stability. Installed fine but after getting to the MAIN menu it had a big NTSC! displaying in the top left, it would then go to a black screen with my TV saying 'Unsupported signal'. It essentially came down to a race to see if I could get into the setup screen and change the res before it crashed. I tried 4312 and that was the same. 4824 worked fine but has the moviesheet crash issue which with networking was the main reason for upgrading my player and choosing the Playon over the live.
I eventually used the composite cables and changed the res that way but it was still freezing on the menu albeit lasting 30-60 seconds. I used the HDMI again and 1080p but again black screen, light disappears off the box, only thing different being it no longer says Unsupported Signal!

Flashed back to 4824 and is fine again. The differences I can see are with 4824 there is no NTSC! in the top left and if I go into the HDMI menu PAL and NTSC are greyed out whereas the few times I got into 4107 and 4312 they were selectable.

Does anyone have any ideas? I am really considering returning the player and getting a Live as moviesheets work fine on them.

Cheers.

EDIT: Should point out all firmware was upgraded via Safe Mode and the instructions followed exactly, also in case anyone was going to say it, after the screen goes black and the light goes off the Tv Sys button does nothing as do any other buttons! lol and have also turned HDMI control off in case that had any effect, it didnt.
