*****EGOSOFT TNBT (X Rebirth)****

Shocked and dissapointed in this game.

After spending countless hours in X3:TC I lost interest when my complexes ended up causing the sectors to turn in to slide shows. I was hoping for great things from the new X3.

The whole inside, walking around stuff feels like they wanted a Mass Effect type setup but failed badly. The character models are terrible as is their animation. It looks like the navigator you pick up has 1,000 polygons with 900 being spent on her ample chest and the remaining 100 for the rest of her entire model. Her proportions also dont scale with different resolutions / aspect ratios.

I have a 6970, i5-2400, 8GB ram and a 27" Dell Ultrasharp. Playing at 2560x1440 went surprisingly smoothly apart from the the charactor models looking like something out of the land of the mantis people (super thin almost triagular arms and legs) and the fact that the menus are just plain unreadable as they do not scale with the resolution setting.

The only real slowdowns I have seen are in the highways where I sometimes get some stuttering, presumably between sector loads. Performance is pretty good IMO. I am only a little way in but no crashes as of yet.

The highways are like a rehash of the ones from Microsofts Freelancer but done much worse. The tunnels within the highway for slipstreaming are terrible and the other space craft models are truely unbelievable. The majority of ships I slipstream and end up nose to tail with (as in cannot really see anything but the back of) look like they were built from 6 square boxes with no textures or details. The fact that they do not appear out of the highways just adds to the destruction of any form of reality the game is trying to get the player to buy in to.

Now, unlike a lot of people, I prefer the cockpit. It, to me at least, gives a better sense of being in a ship rather than being strapped to its nose. I don't mind the missing scanner etc if there are upgrades that allow you to implement them. I can buy in to the idea that the ship is not fully fuinctioning at the beginning as long as some things can be bought / brought back on-line with repairs. A 3D scanner would really being a glaring omission if it doesn't exist.

The lack of cutscenes between sectors is very good. IIRC though, the same was achieved in Freelancer.

The modding community is fantastic for X3 but I am not sure they can overcome a number of design choices EgoSoft made / were forced to make.

I have not tried trading yet having only just got my trading ship so cannot comment on that part of the game. The same with station building. From what I have read I am going to be in for a bit of dissapointment there as well.

Oh well. Will see how EgoSoft try to pull this back in to shape and fingers crossed they will be able to do so along with some wonderful mods from the community.

You might want to wait on the trading front, apparently patch 1.17 broke trading, but patch 1.18 which is currently being Beta tested on the Egosoft forums has fixed trading again.

Ok so I played a bit more yesterday and I may have been a bit harsh. The people models are not so good but are not quite as bad as I stated.

I am finding the game to be fairly enjoyable but not up to the level of the previous X3 games ... yet.

As for trading, I mistakenly asked my energy transporter captain to buy some scanners, just beofre the 'get the energy cells' mission. Being a new employee and not wishing to look bad, it seems he is now constantly trying to buy the scanners and load them in to a ship that cannot carry them. There also seems to be no way to tell him to abort the purchase... I am now sort of stuck :(.

Patch 1.18 released.

• Fixed several causes of crashes in-game and when loading savegames.
• Fixed a specific problem resulting in periodic slow-downs.
• Improved general performance (first small improvement only, more to come).
• Fixed several problems resulting in trade ships getting stuck.
• Fixed several problems with ship/drone docking/undocking behaviour.
• Fixed problem with player drone formations.
• Fixed several small localisation issues.
• Improved skill levels for new NPCs.
• Improved readability of entries in interaction menus.
• Improved GPU listing on laptops with multiple GPUs (still some driver-related issues on certain hardware).

Trading now works apparently, but if you're using a previous save you'll need to let the game run for a few hours so the NPC traders can catch-up and start supplying the galaxy with resources again.

Yeah i'd wait a bit too, these patches are just fixing things piecemeal atm. Better off waiting a couple months until they start to get a handle on it overall.

Sounds like it is on track, but i would wait a bit. There are still many game breaking issues.

Thanks guys I think I will wait. It looked so good in the videos what the hell happened?

Bernd aint telling, but i think the current theory doing the rounds that its a bad console port they threw out the door because money was starting to run out, could well be close to the mark, i know Ego are notorious for buggy games, but this is a whole new level of buginess even for them.

I played X tension for months and x2 for a good while, never got into x3 and was hoping for good things from rebirth :( i can't even bring myself to buy it, think i'll buy it when its bargain price in the future and has run out patches, maybe the community will fix it fully

they are still only bug fixing crashes etc and don't seem to care the ai for your squad members and friendly ships don't actually do anything but sit still like abandoned ships when they are attacked

Give them time. This is months away from returning to. It has certainly made me appreciate X3.

Indeed, ive just picked it up cheap & i won't fire it up until say Feb at the earliest, in the mean time ive been stretching my legs in X3:AP, as im yet to play the new Terran plot in AP.
