*****EGOSOFT TNBT (X Rebirth)****

i really want to get into these games, i have the time to sink in and the interest but something lacks, on the face of them they seem like my ideal game but something doesnt click, hope it does with it as it look absoloutly stunning!

hmmm....not sure about this now. I'm glad they're giving the game a bit of soul with the npc interaction focus but the sandbox has always been the strength of these games, what sets them apart. The DS1 style ship thing could be okay providing it doesn't have the repetitive gameplay of DS1. But still, this seems to be going against the grain of recent X games...

Yay another update. . . Enjoy

Just to clear up a bit about the one ship thing, you can 'control' other ships via drones but your 'body' doesnt leave the one ship it controls the other ship remotely via some VR drop down goggles while the AI co-pilot looks after the one ship.

No idea how well its going to work but it looks like you can still set up fleets of ships etc.

Am I right in thinking they now have proper solar systems with planets you can fly around rather than that silly north/south/east/west gates in the middle of nowhere arrangement?

Edit: Read the FAQ on the forum, so looks like they have and you can count me interested. :)

That's great news. As much as I wanted to like the X series, I found the sector arrangement immersion breaking. It just felt like I was travelling from room to room, rather than roaming throughout space.

I always liked the way Independence War worked. You jumped into a system via a lagrange point and them used some sort of mini jump drive to get around within the system. Been a while since I played so can't remember all the terms.

Think I'd prefer something like that to the highways idea we have here. Might have to dig my copy of I War out. :-)

I don't think the 'one ship' thing is even an issue. In X3 you own a fleet of ships, can control them remotely or teleport/spacewalk/transfer to another ship. End result is a new ship to control and your old ship becomes remote controllable. In XR you own a fleet of ships, can control them remotely or control via VR (which is essentially identical to teleporting over only if you get blown up you wake up back on your own ship) and your own ship becomes remote controllable (or as they call it, 'taken over by the copilot).

imo nothing's changed.

Edit: Actually if the VR thing has no max range you could in theory never actually undock it and just VR your favourite pwnmobile for the whole game and never die. I think we need more specifics...

This is a game I so badly want to like. I've tried so hard to get into these games before but they just don't play right at all :( The jumpgate system and the terrible combat just leave me cold.

The jumpgate system basically made space into a block of closed rooms with jumpgates as the doorways. This just wrecked the immersion for me :(

Thats what I liked about Elite, free roaming space. You could jump in to hyperspace at anytime to travel distances and then just fly normally to reach planets. It behaved more like open space, rather than closed rooms.

Well X-R by what we have been told so far is going to fix both of those problems.

I just cant wait to see what new and exciting things me and my fellow modders/scripters can create in the new game.

Wait, I just listened to an interview - you can move around in the player ship and interact with the crew!!!

Oh my god, one step closer to the ultimate space game - Mass Effect, X series hybrid...
