*** Elden Ring ***

The definition of a game and it's very reason for existing, is to impart enjoyment. If you find a game infuriatig to play, then stop playing. I do laugh at the Dark Souls elitist attitude of, "finally a game that doesn't hold your hand and is actually difficult". They confuse difficult with unforgiving and look down on people who "don't get it". "Wow you are so cool and a real inspiration", said no one ever to a nerd for beating a video game.

What are you doing in this thread, tbh? You spew nonsense that's already been disproved and you're clearly not a fan of the formula. Some people do find enjoyment and satisfaction in Soulsborne games, you're not any different from those elitists, just on the other side of the extreme.

Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro are among the fairest games I've ever played in terms od difficulty.
DS3 was even too easy. They do get overboard very occasionally and can get frustrating but many other games do as well.

What does "difficult" mean for you, then? How can a game be difficult and challenging while forgiving your mistakes as well? What is so unforgiving about Soulsborne? That it requires learning moves and good timing? The very definition of "challenging" then, isn't it? Should it also forgive you for screwing up your dodge timing or for charging in at wrong times?

Go try any competitive fighting game, like Tekken for example, you'll learn what "unforgiving" really means when you have to learn top moves from 50 chars while knowing their framedata and spend hundreds of hours working on movement. Then you die in two well-placed combos.

There's nothing to brag about but there's also no reason to spew nonsense because you suck at Soulsborne and somehow think you know that everyone mistakes "difficult" for "unforgiving", lol.

The old "you aren't allowed on our thread if you don't like this game/thing/item crap" is do old and pointless. Funny I actually said it was a good game, just unforgiving rather than difficult because I have already beat DS 1, 2 and 3 (does that mean I suck at DS?). So I get and understand what DS games are about. But yeah, let's make it about attacking me instead of the point I was making right?

It's unforgiving because there is no pause, quick load, or quick save. When you die you go back to the last checkpoint with all enemies respawned and your runes are gone. So you get to do it all again in the hope of not dying before you get your lost runes and it can make the game feel unfair (rightly or wrongly).

I was responding to the guy who actually felt the need to vent on this thread because he felt frustrated. My post was to point out if the game (or any game really) was that frustrating, then move on to something you do enjoy.

What you mention there is another thing that draws MMO comparisons for me, as followers of the thread know I have mentioned several times now that Elden Ring has a lot of MMO mechanics in it. The when you die you return to the last "bindpoint" and have to recover your body and in the meanwhile all the mobs between you and your body have respawned, is very MMO-like. Must be about the 5th or 6th thing that I've mentioned which is MMO-like. I think it would only be a comparatively small step from what Elden Ring has, to create an Elden Ring MMO.

To clarify, the room im talking about with the Knights is a royal pain in the ass, ive left it till later but doesnt mean im not enjoying the game. Ive played all souls like games in to the ground and i know frustration can be part of the journey until you learn a tactic for a situation. But right know those guys in that room can die in a fire

Well, yeah, that was a part of my point, if a game is umm, harder, more unforgiving or challenging or whatever it can inevitably get frustrating but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the formula and get satisfaction from overcoming that. Clearly most people do, the ganes wouldn't be as acclaimed as they are otherwise.

And yeah, you can suck at Souls and beat all three games, precisely because they aren't nearly as unforgiving as some claim. DSP beat them and he's one of the worst players I've ever seen.

Sekiro has a pause, more generous checkpoints and no meaningful grinding, yet if you go play it, you'll understand souls being "unforgiving" has nothing to do with the above.

Just refunded it on Steam after an hour. I've got a 32:9 monitor and when playing the left and right 1/4 of my screen is obscured by black borders. To fix I'd have to run the flawless widescreen mod but that prevents online play. Bit gutted really, 50 quid for a games and it can't run correctly on my rig.

Okay just got this game and it is running pretty well on my lowly GTX970 with high settings at 1080. FPS hovers in the range of 50-60 fps so not bad.
1 problem I do have though is the controls with keyboard and mouse, has anyone found the actions via keys delayed a slight bit? Does the controls work better with a controller?

Does this support PS4 controller using DS4? I tried and although my PC recognises the controller plugged in the game doesn't

works great on my ps4 pad, its one of these games that has support for it but it will show xbox button prompts and it works by just plugging it in if steam is set up right, not used ds4windows on it :)

Anyone playing on M&KB, i'd like to have a go at this but i'd have to double dip to buy the game and a controller. I've googled a bit and general feedback on M&KB for this is poor so wonder if anyone here is playing that method?

I'm using m/kB, haven't had any problems with it so far but I haven't picked a controller up in over 20 years since moving to PC gaming, one thing I will mention though is the instructions/tips etc in game are default for controller but I later realised you can switch it to m/kB make sure you do that first up

Just finished this. It drops off hard towards the end (akin to DS1 drop off) but otherwise pretty good. Its in no way my favourite souls game, I actually think I prefer a more linear approach to these games but the beginning and middle were a lot of fun.

I'm still not a fan of the damage monsters a lot of the mobs and bosses are. It does feel on a level of unfairness that I always felt previous games got right.
The ending collection of bosses are some of the worse in the series particularly the final one who is absolute bs.

Ultimately though there are some great moments to be found in the game particularly early on, and a lot of original ideas even for a From game.

Same here. Apart from, as above, setting the menu setting for MKB prompts not being in the place you would expect it to be, it plays really nicely with mouse and keyboard.

I've been taking down bosses with abandon over the weekend and now have one sombre weapon at +9 and spirit ash at +10, both of which are helping a lot. Got to the Capital last night, but I am sure I have missed loads of content because so many caves are so well hidden and NPCs seems to like to hang out in out-of-the-way places.

Oh, and here was me starting to feel confident!

Did you use spirit ashes? (I know some people prefer to get by without them, but I have come around to the idea that the game is built around the expectation we will use them) And what build did you use?

I am still really loving this, but juuusst starting to get a bit overwhelmed by how much I may still have to go even after 66 hours. Probably not far off being in a position to power through to the end if I wanted to, though, I guess (level 100 with one almost-maxed weapon and a decent collection of spells).

@Maximum Triceratops @strumpusplunket thanks both. I don't really enjoy controller gaming (mild dexterity/joint pain issue holding/using controller for long periods) so will generally always try M&KB or avoid a game if it absolutely needs a controller to be enjoyed.

I'll grab it off steam and see how I get on for a few hours and make a choice.

Knew you would break xD
