*** Elden Ring ***

Yea, I'm really struggling with it. I haven't a clue where I'm supposed to be going and every I corner I turn it's, "YOU DIED".

I can see why this would be popular with fans of the genre, but I'm amazed it's so popular generally. The visuals are very dated, too. I want to get into it so I'm going to try Dom's Roundtable as suggested above but I think I may be throwing the towel in if I don't "get it" soon.

Ok so the way I did it was like this:

The starting area Limgrave. Stay in this area and dont venture any where else until you have cleared it all and explored everything.

This includes going south. Go south and clear it all out. I left the dragon for last. I think I was level 40 by the time I finally left Limgrave.

In other words I was level 40 by the time I took on Godrick the Grafted.

When I found a boss or mini boss I could not kill, I would either mark it on the map and come back later or I would go and do some rune farming to level up my character.

My favourite place in the early game for rune farming was the camp with soldiers where you first meet Melina and she gives you the bell I think (Gatefront Site of Grace).

Another section I used for rune farming was Siofra Well.

I would just do that over and over to level up a few things when needed.

If you spend time to clear out limgrave you will have a leveled up character, loads of items and weapons etc...

This is the section I did before I moved on North.

Sites of Grace point you at a general direction and there's plenty to discover in Limgrave alone, including the Weeping Peninsula which I'd tackle before Stormveil.

Listen to what NPCs say and read item descriptions.

Also go back to Church of Elleh at night if you haven't already.

You can use standard enemies to learn their patterns and get a feel for the combat, for example some attacks are quite linear and can be sidewalked with some timing for a backstab, you can practice roll timings etc.

100% physical shield can help you in the beginning.

If you haven't played Dark Souls 3 then that might be a better souls game to start with, linear design, a lot smaller game and more focused. This game is like all the previous FromSoft games in one package and then throw that into a massive detailed open world.

I was very much in the same boat Dirk Diggler. Other than a few hours of Demons Souls I havent played any other From software games. I started this and first noticed that the combat seems meaty, but really difficult. I was also wondering where I go and what I am supposed to be doing. I watched a few videos on what to do first and that helped. It has started to click for me, especially as I have now started getting some upgrades. I still think the game is too obtuse for it's own good. I appreciate that a lot of people really like this, but I think a bit of hand holding at the start wouldnt go a miss. I think playing this game and referring to a guide every so often is the way to go. I am following opethedisciple's advice and just going to stick around Limgrave for a while yet.

Also, I watched a few videos of builds and the combat looks even better when you are closer to completing a build and that has also spurred me to push on through the game. Also, some of the bosses look amazing.

So gents I will most likely pick this up in the winter sale and I wanted to check a few things.

I played the original demon souls, shipped dark souls though I have played it a bit and then got Sekiro recently. Sekiro felt easier than I had expected. Where does Elden ring stand? Is it more difficult than Sekiro?

I remember demon souls favoured specialised builds over general builds, is this the same for Elden ring?

Where Sekiro encourages parrying, from what I’ve seen Elden ring is more about well timed rolls. Is this a fair assessment?

I am totally hooked on it now. The first few hours are tough going - it seems ridiculously hard and you dont understand where you should be going, but once you level up a few times and get a decent weapon the difficulty starts to feel a little more fair. It is still hard, but not too unfair. I love the fact that different weapons have different move sets and the fact that you can incorporate magic into your build. I followed the advice on here and stayed in the first area until I got close to level 40. There are a few "traps" in the game that send you to areas that you are yet to unlock and it gives you a taster of what's to come - it's a clever way of showing you where you still need to improve.

Even if you are not a fan of fantasy I think you would be hard pushed not to be impressed with the world and art style.

If anyone is interested, that streamer MissMikkaa (or something) is currently fighting Melania in her streams. She hasn't done it yet but only caught a bit of it today, amazingly there was one point where she found a build where Melania couldn't break her poise and thought that was cheating so decided not using it...as it was "cheating" lol

Against Melania, x 2 simultaneously!

She is the best Elden ring player i have seen. She's beaten the game WITH A DANCE MAT AS A CONTROLLER !!!

I actually sent that video to a few friends that have given up on the game as it was "too hard" :)

Controller + dance mat, 2 games at once. And she also reads chat and interact with them too. I don’t know how lol

@Dirk Diggler - you alt-f4'd and uninstalled didn't you? :D
No!

Actually, I started to get into it after I got hold of a magic staff and started casting some spells. I've taken out a couple of early bosses having learned to summon spirits, and yes I think I could sink some hours in.

The bad news is that I'm currently on a rotation offshore so no gaming for a couple of weeks. On the other hand, I'm off for 9 weeks when I get home so I'll get back on it and be back here whining before you know it. :p

I've never sworn more at a game than this but can't put it down either! I'm right at the end now, so going back and doing a bunch of bits I marked on the map to come back to later and will probably play through again with a different build.

I've avoided soulslike games in the past as too punishing but this one is manageable once you get through the first few hours even for a total pleb like me. I can brute force most stuff with gear, levels and an OP spirit ash. The final boss is proving a PITA though but I am close to cracking it.

Totally agree, I've just completed the main game and loved every minute, (or 300 hrs if you're counting), even the hard bits. This is my first game like this, and it's a breath of fresh air not having a game treat you like a simpleton. I did find myself heading to YouTube for some knowledge, and Wow! I had no idea how deep the game really is. Just superb.

I will be honest, the Elden Beast did have me rebuild my character, but I had heard from the get go you couldn't really go middle of the road with your character, you have to decide on a build type and then go with it.

A definite 10/10

Can't wait for DLC.

I found the opposite on my first playthrough, I built to what was fun and ended up with that. I think I respecced a number of times. As for fresh builds, now I go and collect what I need first and upgrade as I go.

I had been sticking to Limgrave as discussed and was starting to find that area quite easy. I moved on to Liurnia and started to find it tough again so went back to Limgrave to make sure I hadnt missed anything and to try and level up a bit more. I stumbled upon a building that looked insignificant, I went in and discovered something that was truly jaw dropping and so easy to miss (unless there are more buildings like it) . Don't want to spoil it because I know others are early on.

This game really is amazing!

Managed to beat the final boss this weekend with a few gear tweaks and some work on pattern recognition. I'm now going around and doing some stuff I missed (as I tried to avoid spoilers) and managed to walk over the other boss with a rep for being difficult (Haligtree area) in 3 attempts. Will continue for a bit gathering up some of the crafting materials that cant be bought/farmed and then hit up NG+.
