Elden Ring

This game just keeps on giving - I found a grace I had never found before last night in the well in the capital. I thought I had found everything in that area but no - it lead to a few useful bits culminating in a boss fight which gave me a bleed talisman which perfectly fits my mohg spear build.

This is what’s putting me off. The difficulty. Hated how hard dark souls is.
Tbh knowing what games you like after discussions on here I think that you would love it. It’s by far their most accessible game to date. The world they’ve built is truly incredible and it’s a shame that some will never experience it because of their earlier stuff putting people off.

Hmm..might see if I can pick it up cheap. Thing is I’ve been burnt - twice. With DS3 and BB (I find both too difficult honestly) so I’m weary to buying this in case the same thing happens.

Totally get that. And this is no different apart from the fact that if you do hit those difficulties there are a lot more ways to overcome them. Worth a punt if you can grab it second hand or something.

I struggled on the tutorial boss on dark souls 3. I also felt the bonfires were too far apart. A lot of slogging around in that game.

I struggled with both DS and BB and gave up on both within a few hours. Elden Ring has blown me away.

I think I did the first dungeon at about the right level, or possibly even slightly underlevelled, but since then I've gone through it in an order which seems to have left me overlevelled for most areas I'm now exploring - enemies are generally easy, but there are some stronger ones in each area which present an interesting challenge, and worst comes to the worst I mark them and come back later.

I've not once felt that I've had to grind in order to level, it's all felt pretty natural, and there's so much exploring to do that levelling up is always interesting.

I'm not saying it's necessarily for you, and the first 3-5 hours is a bit more of a slog while you're getting into it, but as someone who is not really this game's target audience I can't believe how good it is.

With regards to the first 3-5hrs being a slog, it can be. You either spend the first 3-5hrs "Git Gud" or you spend it levelling up your character. The latter would make the game much easier for the next 30hrs if you do that. especially if you know where to farm.

I once watched a streamer who out of stubbornness, and for content, (mostly for content I suspect) spent the first 6hours of the game right at the start trying to kill that Gold Knight at the start of the game. Basically, he got good. However, that "boss" is optional, a lot of bosses in Elden Rings are optional.

I personally cheesed him, I too killed him straight away but as a Sorcerer, I ran up a building and pelted him with pebble magic from afar.

I also used a guide, there are plenty on YouTube, just search for "what to do at beginning Elden Ring" or "Where to early farm in Elden Ring". Use these video simply to level up, get your bearings before moving on the story.

Ugh, I really wish there was stake of Marika outside of Renalla's; First sign of real frustration having to keep running from the grace just to get to the fight. Even though I'm now level 63; I'm going to go elsewhere and come back to it after upgrading the wolves. Perhaps better luck then in phase 2.

I tend to find the skeletons to be my favourite summon for boss battles. Once they "die" the boss ignores them so they regenerate, and they tend to be useful distractions for much longer

This, they come back and back again. Really useful as a distraction in early to mid game, especially against bosses that doesn't move fast.

I also found this frustrating!

Key to 2nd phase (if you are melee) is left and right +forward. Left/right for the “beam of death” and +forward and roll underneath her other magic spam. If you get it right you can down her before she starts summoning.

Be super aggressive, make sure you have plenty of stamina to keep swinging!

If you are a magic build, I can’t help you. Nobody can! :p

You sound like me, I took the chance with it as well, and guess what its the same, difficultly puts me right off it's just not fun for me at all.

Use summons to distract her summons and then you can then hit her hard with your magic. Just go to do it ASAP.

It is a struggle for sure. Managed to get her down to half health in phase 2 with the skeletons+3 summons but trying to juggle flasks, dodging, targeting (nightmare in phase 1) and those poxy beams is tough! Wish there was a slow mo option (:

After more than 10 failed attempts, I'll take a pass on her for a while.

Went through Stormhill yesterday and killed Godrik on PS4, wanted to do the same on PS5 version but I think I'll just deal with worse vegetation and stick to PS4 as the stuttering in the open world kills my enjoyment when riding around.

When it runs 60 or close to 60 it feels great but it drops too often to feel enjoyable overall, dungeons are fine but riding Torrent in Lliurnia and parts of Limgrave can be painful.

PS4 is super smooth in comparison, on PS5 even the map stutters when you scroll around.

I have no idea how they plan to implement RT with this sort of performance:p

I never died to Rennala on PC, hopefully it won't go bad here as I think t's the only longer run-up to the boss in the game:P

You tried changing from or to performance mode too? Can't remember which mode I used on the PS5 but never noticed any drops or stutters that impacted my experience.

Yup, perf mode exclusively for me. I tried quality once and lasted five seconds before switching. Riding around certain places is really jarring, you can feel the drops and stuttering so much as everything around you loads in. Small drops in dungeons are nothing serious and vrr smooths them out pretty well, the problems happen during traversal mostly.

Judging by the amount of threads on the issue I'm not the only one.

I sure as hell hope they're working on that RT patch and will iron out the performance then because otherwise things will get dire, sub-30fps with RT easily.

It's disappointing that I have to settle with PS4 visuals on a new console but I don't think I'll be able deal with the performance in certain places, especially that PC, supposedly marred with problems, handles it just fine and I get both improved vegetation and hardly any stutters. Even when drops happen, the game doesn't chug like on PS5. Same with PS4 version, when the game drops a frame here and there (rarely) it doesn't introduce any stuttering.

If you have access to the PS4 version you can try Laskyar Ruins for example and compare the two, or just riding straight through Lliurnia or Gatefront towards Agheel Lake.

EDIT: TBH, I'd take a locked 40fps 120hz mode with proper framepacing over this but the game can't even run in a 120hz container so...
